About Micah

Bio

My only concern is helping my students reach their potential. I begin by getting to know students, their unique talents, stories, and struggles. From there, I craft individualized plans to best fit needs. Our sessions are intense but also engaging--and sometimes even a little fun. I like to make jokes, but I also like to get work done. Students leave my sessions confident in what they have learned and feeling accomplished.

Public Speaking

At Goshen College, I taught a hybrid writing and public speaking course for several years. This course focused on both academic presentations (like persuasive and informative speeches) and non-academic forms of public speaking (like storytelling). I am a also scholar-facilitator for the Indiana Humanities Council, which gives me a great deal of hands-on experience speaking in front of large, diverse groups about a variety of topics. Finally, I am a writer and poet who has been performing my work for almost 15 years.

Reading,

Reading

For almost a decade as part time college professor, I have taught several courses explicitly dedicated to reading and reading skills. I have worked with those students to build vocabulary and develop good reading habits. I also have lots of practice using these skills in my own reading life. I use these skills to complete and understand the equivalent reading of several books per week. Further, as a part time college writing professor at places like Notre Dame and Goshen College, I am also a de facto reading instructor because the skills overlap. In those classes, I often help students see the connections between reading skills and good writing skills.

Further, I am a voracious reader and understand how to use context to help determine meaning.

Best tutor on Wyzant for reading, writing, and pep talks

Micah has been a godsend. He's helped me with both reading and writing strategies, as well as breaking tasks into manageable chunks. He's extremely efficient and is able to get to the most important issue very quickly. He's a great editor and I really enjoy our sessions. I've had at least half a dozen meetings with him already. Hands down, I wouldn't have been able to get through many of my assignments without him. Thanks Micah!

Knowledgeable and helpful tutor

Micah and my son worked on the English and Writing sections of the ACT. They improved respectively from a 28 to a 35 and a 29 to 33. Once my son was satisfied with his testing, Micah also helped tremendously with his mountain of college essays.
