About Jake

I am a second grade teacher in South Bend, IN. I love education and I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since before I can remember. There is no better feeling as an educator than seeing the face of a student who finally has that "light bulb" click for them.

It is a constant reminder of why I do this job every day and why I love it so much. I am constantly looking to better myself by finding the latest research to ensure that all of my students reach their fullest potential. I never give up and I hold my students to the same standards that I hold myself.

Outside of education, I love all sports. nothing beats playing sports outside or watching my favorite teams with my friends and family. I have loved Chicago sports my whole life and nothing is better than watching the Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears, or Bulls. I just love being outside and traveling to new places and learning new things.

Before teaching second grade, I taught 4th grade math and science. I have been trained to integrate math into every subject and I know the state standards very well. I pride myself on utilizing real world applications for my students so they understand why they are learning math a certain way.

Being a second grade teacher, I have seen students that read at a very high level, and students that read at a low level. I am working with a small group every day to help readers reach their goals. I am trained in teaching kids to read the basics and I am trained in teaching how to read more fluently. I use a wonderful program on the IPad that progress monitors students very well. This helps me identify a weakness and help it become a strength.

Since college, I have been trained in both state standards and Common Core standards so I know how stressful it is to parents who learned one way while their students are learning another. Teachers had to be taught how to teach Common Core as well. I have gained those skills and can teach Common Core along with teaching the old ways.

Having a current teaching license and teaching for three years, I still have a lot to learn. However, the skills and knowledge that I have gained in college and in my first three years of teaching, have made me a strong leader and a competitor. I want my students to be the best and I want them to succeed for themselves. I have been a part of school that went from low achieving to an award school in the state. I know how to get students to where they are supposed to be.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I am flexible with my schedule, so if you would like to set up a time and place that works best for you, I will make it work for me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played basketball in high school where I was the team captain and point guard. I have tutored basketball while in high school as well, so I have experience teaching the basic skills of the sport. I also coached an 8th grade basketball team for two years while I was in college. I have gained skills in teaching the fundamentals of the game and making kid's weaknesses become their strengths.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently a second grade teacher, but I also taught fourth grade for 2 years. My bachelor's degree is in elementary education and I have attended many professional developments to make myself a master teacher. I am trained in teaching elementary math, reading, science, and social studies. I can teach writing and test taking skills to elementary age students as well.
