About Susan

I got my master's degree in elementary education from IUSB in 1995 and I'm currently certified in elementary and ESL education. After working in the field of education for nearly a quarter century, I've come to realize that children are, by nature, able to learn many more things than the traditional classroom allows for. The first key of learning is to capture the heart, invite the question and spark engagement. The second key is to engender a sense of 'fail-safe' where trial and error is encouraged and mistakes are learning experiences in disguise. Beneath everything there needs to be a solid structure of skills, vocabulary and content; a clear incremental path to follow and always, always generous doses of respect and love.

In tutoring every minute counts. When I was directing an elementary program for over a hundred English language learners from more than two dozen countries in grades K-6, my staff and I found that the best way to nail the skills and standards required by the district was to embed them in learning topics that the students loved. Experiential learning, social learning, rote learning and using media and computers are only a few of the paths to mastery of skills and concepts. In a tutorial setting, the sky is the limit in terms of finding new and creative ways to assure success in learning.

My profile headline says 'Professional Educator', which indicates (correctly) that I am fully qualified and experienced in designing and executing a learning experience that will be tailor made for my students; one that will maximize their success and be a positive opportunity to try and master new things. I'm also a 'Learning Coach' which demands a sensitivity to the needs and desires of every student I work with. I want to begin by listening to your needs and the parameters you are working with. Drop me a line to start the conversation.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I got my masters degree in elementary education in 1995 after spending over a decade in the classroom. I'm currently certified in both elementary education and ESL education. Teaching children became up close and personal when I had the opportunity to home school my own crew, including two with special needs. I bring a number of teaching strategies and approaches to the table because every child learns differently.

Homeschool

I got my master's degree in elementary education from IUSB in 1995 and I'm currently certified in elementary and ESL education. While I'm a firm believer in mastering skills and content, I also know that the adventure of learning is unique to every child. I've developed curriculum for many subjects and grades and I'm happy to create a program that specifically meets the needs of the children I work with. My strengths are in all subject areas K-5, and in language arts, history and social studies for the upper grades.
