About Susan

After teaching for more than a decade in elementary and middle schools, I took time off to get my Masters degree in elementary education. We chose to home school our three children, so rather than heading back to the classroom, I became an adjunct at IUSB and later at Bethel, where I spent several years teaching their elementary advanced reading methods course for their Transition to Teaching program. These days I run a freelance fiction editing service and serve as college supervisor for Bethel's student teachers.

The process of learning how to read has fascinated me since I began teaching in 1980. The process of creating joyful, motivated and thoughtful readers is helped by the skill building of the best programs out there, but the process of creating meaning from print involves so much more. My tutorial services include a complete and thoughtful diagnostic session that includes not only the cognitive process of reading, but also consider stress level, preferred learning modality, topics of interest, attention style and affective reading skills. The plan that we'll design together will be student focused with an agreed on number of sessions and with clearly targeted activities designed to remedy deficiencies by building on strengths. I am very much a 'hands on' instructor. Software and electronic resources are utilized only as needed.
I enjoy working with students one on one because it gives us so much latitude to fine tune our activities to include exactly what the student needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I got my masters degree in elementary education in 1995 after spending over a decade in the classroom. I'm currently certified in both elementary education and ESL education. Teaching children became up close and personal when I had the opportunity to home school my own crew, including two with special needs. I bring a number of teaching strategies and approaches to the table because every child learns differently.

Homeschool

I got my master's degree in elementary education from IUSB in 1995 and I'm currently certified in elementary and ESL education. While I'm a firm believer in mastering skills and content, I also know that the adventure of learning is unique to every child. I've developed curriculum for many subjects and grades and I'm happy to create a program that specifically meets the needs of the children I work with. My strengths are in all subject areas K-5, and in language arts, history and social studies for the upper grades.
