About Joe

Bio

My name is Joe, and I have a bachelor's degree in English literature from Indiana University. This is not, as you might expect, a complaint. I'm very happy with my education, except that I want more of it, and I very firmly believe, as my hero Vonnegut believed, that the Humanities is the most rewarding field of all to study and to work in.

I write workers' instructions, engineering documents, and machinery code for a living. I also write poems and stories because those things are what make us feel alive. I've taught people how to swim and how to read. For a time, I was a senior student and a junior instructor at one of the only traditional kung fu schools in Northwest Indiana. It's been fun.

Regarding language: I won the Lester M. Wolfson Prize for excellence in poetry in 2014, the same year I was editor-in-chief of IUSB's Undergraduate Research Journal. I've edited or assisted in two other research journals. I feel that I understand all writing fairly well, and can convey the rules of English grammar clearly and easily. I've always operated by the maxim that true genius is expressing difficult things in a simple way (not that I think I'm a genius!).

Regarding mathematics: I use more math in my day-to-day engineering life than I ever thought I would as a young English major. I also have a secret weapon in the person of my own child, whose homework exposes me to all the new ways today's students are working all the old problems.
