I have been a K-12 substitute teacher since 2005. This has allowed me the opportunity to be flexible enough to quickly tap into unique learning styles and circumstances. I completed a Transition to Teaching program at Indiana University, South Bend and am in the processing of finishing my M.S. Ed. in Elementary Education. I have worked with two SES Tutoring programs, one for Notre Dame, and one for Brain Hurricane in Chicago.
A certified teacher, I am a patient, passionate educator who can always achieve positive results and improvements in your child's learning experience. I make learning fun and engaging for each student. One-on-one/small group tutoring are my favorite teaching dynamics because it gives me a chance to really get to know a student and understand their unique style of learning. I happily work with both main stream and students with special needs, and I'm able to develop a strong teacher/student relationship.
I realized that I have ADD as an adult. I learned on my own, without medication, how to succeed in school and in life with this. I know how to embrace attention issues and work with students to achieve positive results.
Your child will increase performance, develop better problem solving skills and enjoy increased self-esteem. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you. Dawn has been a great tutor for our daughter! They have made quite a connection and my daughter looks forward to working on school work with Dawn. We couldn't be more pleased.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with students that have ADD/ADHD in both a full classroom and small group/one-on-one settings. I can quickly adapt to learning styles. I'm very patient with children and can make the learning process fun and in conjunction with appropriate time periods.
I have ADD myself and have navigated my world without medication. As a graduate student, I have a 4.0 average.
I have worked with many students diagnosed with AS, both in a classroom and individual/small group dynamic. I’m extremely sensitive to the cues a person reveals on any level and I’m flexible enough to adjust to any circumstance. I understand that poor performance may not be connected to a learning deficiency as much as a coping mechanism that allows for more effective self-expression.
Children with Autism occupy a very special place in my heart. I have worked with kids with mild to extreme cases. I've always been able to reach these beautiful angels. I can easily adapt to their most effective learning style and relate to them on their terms. I love working with these children.
My favorite story to tell is when I began the school year working with an after school program as a shadow counselor for a 2nd grader. His peers were uncomfortable with him and weren't sure how to relate to him. By the end of the school year, he was the most popular kid in the program, and everyone wanted to be his friend. He was the star.
I've worked as a substitute teacher in special education classroom dynamics as a shadow teacher and in tutoring capacities.
I have worked with Fountas/Pinnell leveled reading intervention strategies in the classroom.
I also have worked with students in a tutoring dynamic, using Wilson/LiPs cognitive remediation techniques. This is very effective for those children having an extremely difficult time with phonetic skills.

I have experience working with the Fountas/Pinnell stragegies, as well as Wilson/LiPs intervention approaches. I've worked with elementary school students both in a classroom dynamic and in small group/one-on-one situations. I have a successful record of improving reading skills of students, especially as a tutor.
