About Peter

Before I get started with my academic and professional strengths, I would like to let you know that I am a very passionate and empathetic teacher. The results that I achieve with my clients comes from my ability to connect with the student within session. I care deeply about the results of the work I do, and, therefore, I try as much is possible to keep and open line of conversation and discussion with the parents and older students about incentives, goals,the continued progress. I am capable of tutoring in a number of academic areas. Nonetheless, I would say that I am most proficient in the areas of reading, spelling, note taking (lecture and chapter), and of course comprehension and writing.

I received a BA in English Lit. from Sewanee: the University of the South and graduated Summa Cum Laude. I graduated in 2012, and since then have been working with a variety of students with and without learning disabilities. I have recently returned from 2 years of workingto develop a small non-profit in Haiti. I am now looking to create a tutoring company based on the Lindamood-Bell style learning center. I will be located in the South Bend area, and, at the start, I will be willing to travel to homes and schools as necessary.

In terms of specific programs that I have experience with, I have worked as a Consultant for a Lindamood-Bell learning center in Deerfield, IL. During my time there, I was promoted and trained for the role of Consultant. Not only did I continue to work with students on a daily basis, but I paced each student's tasks according to their specific needs. Each week I met with each student's family, showed their progress, and discussed the next step in the program. This requires a deep understanding of the subject matter and experience within the different programs. I am saying this because I want to highlight the fact that my experience puts me in a far better position than anyone else who has simply been trained in the Visualizing and Verbalizing and Seeing Stars programs. I would be more than happy to discuss my experience with anyone at any time.

I left the learning center in order to pursue non-profit work in Haiti. I have just returned after my 2 year stint with Little Footprints, Big Steps. I will be open to travel and my schedule is very flexible. However, It is very important to manage expectations. I will not try and tell you that doing Lindamood-Bell programs 2-5 hours a week will make a quick impact on your child's ability to read and comprehend. Each child is different and my recommendations will differ accordingly.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I was hired as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. After 5 months as a clinician I was promoted to The position of consultant. I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. ADD/ADHD were common diagnosis for many of the children that I worked with during my time at LMB. An ability to keep the child focused on the work is essential. I don't claim the ability to change the symptoms. Instead, I simply claim that I have and arsenal of behavior modifications tricks and tools that give me the the ability to redirect the child's focus consistently. My goal is getting in as many "learning moments" as possible into a session. I am not focused on changing the child's moral character by any means. I want academic results, and I'll do whatever is necessary to get that done. Whether it me bouncing a ball back and worth with the child to keep them focused on the vowel sound we are focusing on or sitting under a table in order to get the child the read a few essential paragraphs with me.

Autism

I was hired as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. After 5 months as a clinician I was promoted to The position of consultant. I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. For those of you who are not aware, children with Autism (at both ends of the spectrum), are often effectively instructed at LMB. The programs themselves are often very effective if the instructor has a consistent schedule with the child, the ability to efficiently redirect the child's behavior, and experience in manipulating the programs to fit each child's specific needs. I have personally worked with 7 children on the spectrum. These children have ranged from outwardly normal and socially functioning students to the 5 year olds who have an almost constant need to stim.

Dyslexia

I was hired as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. After 5 months as a clinician I was promoted to The position of consultant. I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. For those of you who are not aware, children with dyslexia are one of the staple clients for LMB. The Seeing Stars and VV programs are very effective in providing skills and habits that enable a child to deal with dyslexia in academic and everyday situations. I have personally worked with over 20 children who have dyslexia or similar symptoms.

Hard Of Hearing

I was hired as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. After 5 months as a clinician I was promoted to The position of consultant. I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. I worked with a 15 year old boy with cerebral palsy who had just received cochlear implants. We worked on decoding, vocabulary growth, reading and communicating out loud, and reading comprehension. He grew 4 reading levels in 3 months. It was not easy, but I learned a lot and so did our student!

Phonics

I was hired as a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. After 5 months as a clinician I was promoted to The position of consultant. I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. The Seeing stars program is founded on the idea of being able to strengthen symbol imagery at the basic level of phonemes. After strengthening phonemes a children's confidence in their ability to decode is increased significantly and, while coupled with sight word and vocabulary practice, the child's ability to read quickly and effectively becomes much less difficult and much more rewarding for both the kids and the parents.

Soccer

I had played soccer throughout high school and was the captain my senior year. I played 1 year of D3 in college at Sewanee: The University of the South before stopping in order to pursue my academics more effectively and travel abroad. I have a strong understanding of the basics and I am very skilled in teaching and motivating children. My rapport with children has been a great strength in all of the work I have done during and after college.

Special Needs

I have experience in Visualizing and Verbalizing (VV), Seeing Stars, On Cloud 9, Lips, and Talkies. I have also trained others in these programs. I have worked with many special needs children. Some of the diagnosis incude: Dyslexa, cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, hard of hearing, speech impediments, Autism (both ends of the spectrum), and one child had to have a feeding tube in his stomach at all times. With this last student, I would often have to stop the instruction and help him eat. I am incredibly flexible and empathetic. Every child and adult has the right to learn, and I have no qualms about doing what it takes in order to provide effective instruction.
