I am a published writer (articles and one short story) who enjoys coaching beginning writers and others who wish to become more effective communicators. I have worked primarily with older adults who were working on book manuscripts, but am happy to work with teens and young adults.
In addition, I worked with McGraw-Hill Publishing for three years as a test evaluator. My content areas were reading comprehension, language arts and writing. Because I was responsible for scoring ISTEP short answer responses, I am able to communicate standards and expectations to the student and help them to evaluate the quality of their work, which should help him / her to be better prepared for standardized testing.
My areas of expertise include nonfiction writing (essays, articles, persuasive pieces, etc.), grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary and phonics. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Have tutored reading and spoken English for non-native speakers while in college. Worked primarily with Asian (Japanese and Korean) students, but I believe that the basics of teaching spoken and written English work the same for students from many parts of the world.
I work to improve basic reading comprehension skills using phonics and etymology (the history and meaning of root words) so that the student is capable of sounding out new words and reasoning their meanings.
I am a published writer, and have experience in both writing and editing books and journalistic articles. I also worked with McGraw-Hill / BCT as an evaluator for written work submitted on the ISTEP exams, as well as other state-issued examinations across the country. As a result, I am very aware of the criteria educators use to judge written material at grade levels from 3 through 12, and I have the ability to guide and coach novice writers toward greater proficiency.
