When I received my Master's Degree with a 4 point grade average, the head of the English Department convinced me to join the faculty as an English Composition instructor at Purdue University. I was planning on tutoring and working on my PhD, but my fascination and love for teaching resulted in spending decades in the classroom and gaining valuable insight into teaching.
I fell in love with teaching-engaging all kinds of students to not only think critically but to improve their reading and writing skills. I helped them to achieve a better understanding of the material and as a result better grades.
Probably the best lesson I learned was to quickly identify the weaknesses that my students had. This led to finding solutions for those students. My classes were filled with diverse populations-again an opportunity to find unique solutions well-fitted to individual learners.
Working with a diverse student population was not only a great challenge, it was great fun! There were many memorable experiences along the way.
One was being chosen by Oprah Winfrey to be a judge for her national essay writing contest for high school students across the country.
I look forward to working with each student, the challenge, creating unique lessons to fit each student's needs, and finding that each student I have helped has become a confident and successful student.

Grammar is one of my favorite lessons in teaching English. To me grammar is like a puzzle- one that must be figured out as one of the first basic of the English language. I even like diagramming sentences!

I have been teaching English for many years and have developed certain "tricks" for students to try that help them to learn. For me, it is always a pleasure see them succeed:)
Vocabulary

Teaching reading at all levels, from middle school, high school to college and beyond has given me the skill-set to solve most kinds of reading problems and to create unique lessons that a student might benefit from. Decades in the English classroom have not only enabled a quick recognition of reading weaknesses but a tried and true method to help strengthen this most important requirement for all learners.

Literature,

Literature

I fell in love with Shakespeare as a child living in England. This love grew as I continued through school-all the way to graduate school and beyond. In fact, all literature was always a favorite: American, French, English, poetry, literary theory-anything related to literature still fascinates me and I still take classes in literature as often as I can. I love to teach literature and to tutor because literature can challenge one to think about the human condition in many ways. It is how we learn about history and culture- so many things!

I have worked as an English Composition instructor at Purdue University for close to 20 years. I have also tutored students from many different backgrounds. My strength lies in quickly identifying the weaknesses they have and coming up with alternative solutions: I BELIEVE THAT ALL STUDENTS CAN LEARN, JUST NOT IN THE SAME WAY.

Great Editing

I used Laura for proofreading and editing (specifically with adding transitions) of my capstone sections prior to submission. Her editing really helped add some extra oomph to my writing and she took all of my recommendations and thoughts into consideration. She also provided me with tips for success with future writing.

Laura is a very Knowledgeable and Patient tutor

Laura is a very Knowledgeable and Patient tutor. I recommend her strongly for any English courses that you might be planning. She helped my son with AP English courses. It would be more effective to start early over the year with her rather than closer to the exam.

Laura is an excellent tutor. She is really helpful and knowledgeable. She is helping me to brainstorm about what to write and then giving me feedback so that I am learning while taking my writing to the next level. She is really positive and easy to work with.
