I am a huge number nerd and love teaching math to non-math people. I am particularly fond of algebra, statistics and calculus. I am here for anyone who feels math is an obstacle to fulfilling one’s academic potential. Solving problems is a second nature to me. I find it exciting and I love to share my enthusiasm with my students.
In addition to tutoring mathematics, I assist with running a local family business and I work part-time as a Teaching Assistant for upper-level math courses at a local university. I enjoy this type of work as it is very inspiring for me to see students succeed.
I have been teaching/tutoring since 2006. I originally started helping out students with learning disabilities while in college with various academic assignments before quickly moving on to psychology and most recently mathematics. I have worked with students of all ages from various cultural backgrounds during my teaching career. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and I have completed numerous graduate-level courses in Management. As of May of 2014, I hold a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics. I appreciated that Leona took the time to get to know my daughter's school situation and where she is with her class before starting to help her with some of the things she is struggling with.
Leona is professional, caring, and flexible. We were in a bind for a required class that was needed to graduate and she responded quickly to our request and met our needs in a way that we will always be grateful for. I would recommend Leona for all of your tutoring needs. She's awesome!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. It's an important one, too, since it teaches all the necessary foundations to move on to other upper-level math courses. I have several years of experience tutoring algebra since it is one of the most requested subjects and I use it on a daily basis while working as a Teaching Assistant at a local college to help students get through several 300- and 400-level math courses. I have also worked as an instructor of college algebra laboratory class in the past. Algebra is a powerful tool and studying it can help open up other important subjects such as biology, physics and engineering and many others. It is a fascinating subject worth the challenge and I believe it can be a lot of fun too!
Algebra is one of my favorites, both to tutor and as a subject in general. It's an important one, too, since it teaches all the necessary foundations to move on to precalculus, trigonometry, and other upper-level math courses. Hence, I feel it's important to leave no detail out when learning it. I have several years of experience tutoring algebra because it's one of the most requested subjects and I use it on a daily basis while working as a Teaching Assistant at IUE to help students get through several higher level math courses. I have also worked as an instructor of college algebra laboratory class.
I have completed a bachelor's program in mathematics, including many advanced topics, and am currently working as a Teaching Assistant for upper level online math courses at a local university. I have completed over 120 hours of in-class fieldwork in mathematics and taught many students, both in the classroom, and in a tutoring environment. I have in-depth understanding of the material and I know how to explain it. Pre-calculus is essentially the study of functions, which I find fascinating. Pre-calculus is important as it is a prerequisite for the college calculus sequence. Knowing this material before starting calculus makes the mastery of calculus much easier.
I find the study of human mind and behavior fascinating. I have an honors degree in psychology from a Canadian University. I have an extensive experience in numerous psychology subjects I learned through my courses and psychology research projects. In addition, I possess top-notch writing and research skills acquired during my final year of the psychology program while conducting an independent research project in the area of cognition (language and memory). I can help with exam preparation, papers, essays, and any research-driven writing assignments.
