I have been a teacher, trainer, consultant and tutor. I have been an educator for the last twenty years. I adamantly believe that if there is not a strong foundation an individual has little chance of being successful in educational endeavors and is also hampered in life skills.
The basics in education of reading, writing, and arithmetic seem lacking for some. This may be do to lack of the ability of the system to explore a variety of ways to address the learning experience and therefore not being able to engage all students to the best of their abilities. In an attempt to cover much more information we seem to have become very rigid in how that can be accomplished. There are actually a number of ways to create understanding of the same information and for each person the way they best learn may differ.
The concept that there are different ways to approach the same problem and still arrive at the right answer does not often seem to be explored. I choose to try to assist in looking at the same information from several points of view to see that the rigidity is not necessary to achieve success.
My background is one of jack of many trades and not pigeonholed to one. I have taught all levels from teaching in a preschool to teaching high school and even at the college level. I have spent time in all areas of the work force from the academic, healthcare, industrial, non profit, and consulting.
I have taught science at the 7th, 8th and 9th grade level. I have been a substitute teacher for everything from kindergarten to senior level. In individual tutoring I have ranged from kindergarten to 12th grade, and many of the years in between, primarily working with math and language arts areas since they are the building blocks for success.
I would be available both after school and in the early evening. I have been a teacher, trainer, consultant and tutor. I have been an educator for the last twenty years. Ms. Connie is an amazing teacher. she has been able to engage my daughters in learning over the summer months and has been helping them prepare for the next school year. she is patient and kind and the my girls love her. my six year old can't believe when her tuition time is over for the day and looks forward to each new session. i never thought i would see that. my eight year old has now been spending more time reading and seems to enjoy it more. it was always hard to get my eight year old to read a book yet with ms. Connie tutoring, my daughter is developing more confidence in reading. with ms. Connies help, i'm sure my girls will be prepared and ready for the next school year and it's great to see that they are happy to learn with ms. Connie.
We are so happy and blessed to have found Connie as a tutor for our son. His situation is not easy or common. She has all the skills, an excellent educational background, and good will necessary to help him advance. She is thorough, creative, and does research. She is able to teach him various areas of the language in a helpful, fun, and effective way. He has improved since he started lessons with Connie, and continues to improve. He looks forward to his sessions with her. She is a great tutor, very patient, professional, and devoted.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked at the college level in career planning for 6 years. In this time, I have assisted many individuals in writing resumes when looking for employment.
I have been a substitute teacher and a tutor for all grades in the elementary school. I have tutored in the South Bend Community Schools for the past two years and worked with about 15 to 20 children. I have primarily taught language arts and math since these are the mainstay classes for all children. When time permitted I also covered science or social studies for those in the fifth, sixth or seventh grades.
I have also taught in the Wilson-Lipps program which is a remedial phonetic program for kindergarten, first and second graders. This approach assisted children who were at a deficit in learning the alphabet, its sounds and usage in reading and spelling. The progress children were able to make was impressive.
I also worked as a tutor for the Indiana state tests with children that seemed to be a bit behind in their readiness for the testing.
Elementary math is the basic foundation that one needs to begin their education and the math requirement they will need throughout the rest of their education. Learning and understanding the basic concepts of addition and subtraction as well as the basics of fractions, shapes, measurements and many other properties that are part of math is the basis of elementary math.
Prealgebra is a compilation of the concepts necessary for a student to understand algebra. The problems presented are a bit less complex so that a better understanding can be achieved of the process that is being used and will be used in algebra 1. It is also a complete review of all the mathematics that the student has been exposed to at lower levels. This can assist in pinpointing any areas of weakness that a student may have in their foundation of mathematics and allow a second opportunity to learn these concepts and processes.
I have worked with K-3 in a program using phonetics to improve the reading and spelling ability of children at that age range.
Children must know the letters of the alphabet but more importantly the sound or sounds that the letter or in combination make in a word. This process breaks words down to small sound bites and then assists with their ability to remember and spell correctly as well.
I have taken a seminar on study skills. I have also worked with tutoring over a hundred kids, and improving their study skills is always part of their improvement.
