About Jesse

Why did I decide to become a tutor? An excellent question, and an easy one to answer! I remember being a middle school student struggling with algebra. The formulas and equations my teacher was writing on the board might as well have been another language. My mother hired a tutor to help assist me. I remember his smiling face, friendly demeanor, and, most importantly, his desire to see me succeed. Thanks to his care, I found success in the mathematics world and went on to win the Algebra 2 award as a high school student. I remember the amazing feeling of success I had when I overcame my struggles in math. I have a strong desire to help others achieve this same feeling as well!

I completed a full year of mathematics education at Purdue University before deciding to switch to Agricultural Economics, so I would be able to find a career on my family's farm. I have experience teaching as a substitute for my local school corporation and also taught a computer class this past spring to help cover for a teacher on maternity leave. While subbing, I was given the opportunity to teach lesson plans in Algebra 1 and 2 left behind by the regular teacher. I would help any students struggling and answer their questions.

Another subject in which I am both passionate and knowledgeable is Spanish. I have a minor in Spanish from Purdue University where I studied abroad in Spain. Whether you're a high school student needing help in a course, an adult wanting to learn a new language, or trying to prepare for a trip to a Spanish-speaking country, I'm the tutor for you! I use our session time to teach you exactly what you need. I provide you with resources that you can use on the days that you don't have a session scheduled so you can keep learning even without me.

I have experience teaching and tutoring homeschool students in algebra, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, and Spanish levels 1, 2, and 3.

As a tutor, I understand that questions may arise throughout the week on days when we do not have sessions scheduled. That's why, in addition to the tutoring I offer my students, I also offer free homework help. If you or your child find they are struggling on a homework assignment and need assistance from me ASAP, all you need to do is call me up! As long as the session does not go over 15 minutes, you will not be charged.

I have a passion for education that I would love to pass on to your children! I look forward to the opportunity to help you or your child find success in whatever subject area you may be struggling with!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have experience substitute teaching both middle school and high school aged students algebra 1. I have a passion for math and enjoy helping others grasp difficult concepts.

Algebra 2

I am currently tutoring two homeschool students in algebra 2 as well as two other public school students. I thrive in situations which require me to explain difficult concepts to students. I also have experience substitute teaching algebra 2 to high school students. While attending high school, I earned the Algebra 2 award, which goes to the student with the most outstanding grade for that class.

Elementary Math

I have experience teaching elementary age students at my local community school corporation. During that time I was asked to teach the students their math lesson for the day. I taught the entire class the lesson and then invited students who were struggling with the material to sit in a group with me so I could help them better understand.

Homeschool

I have experience tutoring homeschool students using the Abeka Curriculum. I am currently assisting them in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Spanish. My responsibilities include assisting in corrections of questions they missed on graded assignment as well as test preparation. I also prepare worksheets and provide explanations to them to aide in lesson reinforcement should they have any questions about the concepts presented by their online teacher.

Microsoft Excel

I taught a high school computer class for 12 weeks that focused on the use of Microsoft Excel. I took several classes at Purdue University that relied heavily on the use of Microsoft Excel. I am also involved in my family's farm and have assisted in creating spreadsheets to keep track of business transactions.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I taught a high school computer class for 12 weeks this past spring. I also have experience creating PowerPoint presentations from my college career.

Prealgebra

I have experience substitute teaching math classes at my local school corporation. After teaching the lesson plan left behind by the teacher, I would sit with students who were struggling and gave them one-on-one time to ensure they understood the concept.

Reading

I completed a full year in the mathematics education program at Purdue University before completing a bachelors degree in agricultural economics. I have experience teaching algebra to middle school students as a substitute teacher. I have also begun educating my own child at home in phonics and sign language.

Spanish

I have a minor from Purdue University in Spanish. During my college career, I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain for six weeks where I studied at a local university and learn about the Spanish government, culture, and food.

Very helpful

Jesse worked with my daughter on algebra. I really like the Wyzant online session where you can use the white board to write things out. Jesse would write out an equation and my daughter would solve it. Jesse was very patient and helpful.
