About Martha

My award-winning writing/editor experience comes from years as a marketing/communications professional. Throughout this time, I have also served as a part-time substitute teaching in Noblesville Schools for K-12. I specifically enjoy teaching classes in Journalism, Speech, Literature and Writing.

As a Butler University graduate, I have 30 plus years experience in English, Grammar, Literature, Proofreading and Public Speaking. I have won more than 10 awards for writing, media relations, special events planning and marketing collateral from my professional organization, International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Currently, I own a freelance writing/marketing business. I secure new clients and help them develop their goals/objectives, strategies and tactics to increase their revenue. Specifically, I write/edit for print and online collateral, such as social media, enewsletters, case studies, websites, blogs and brochures. Some of clients have included IU Medical Center, Franciscan Health and The Indianapolis Star.

I thrive in a learning environment where I focus on a student who needs extra help outside of the busy classroom. Sometimes students have a difficult time during timed assignments when they have to develop a narrative or creative writing exercise. Everyone has a story to tell. I encourage students to write about something they have experienced first-hand or are passionate about. I will help your student create term papers, literature prompts, narratives, speeches, poems or other assignment in an organized and creative style. I encourage students by giving special kudos when they do a good job.

My goal is to make learning to write fun by using a step-by-step process. Breaking a large assignment into small pieces helps students feel more confident that they can finish on a deadline. One example is to encourage them to make a bubble diagram to organize their thoughts and brainstorm about the subject. Then I ask them to develop an outline and research the topic on the Internet to secure reliable sources. Next they are asked to create a rough draft of the paper for my review. After making changes in content/grammar, they submit a final draft for my editing/comments.

On a personal note, I am the parent of three young adults who have succeeded in high school and college. I know how important it is to help high school students achieve high scores on their SAT/ACT tests. Writing , Literacy and Reading Comprehension make up a large part of the tests. I am an excellent proofreading and can help them navigate their own assignments so they have ownership of what they have accomplished and then assist in honing their skills. I also encourage them to take practice tests offered online.

I am available Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I look forward to working with your student!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

As a marketing/communications professional, I have led staff meetings of more than 100 employees. I have also presented PowerPoint presentations in large-group settings to explain goals and objectives of a project and/or informed the audience about a new healthcare technology. In my college internship I worked for Channel 4 news as a reporter. During high school Speech Team, I won awards for Broadcasting.
