About Todd

I am an experienced teacher licensed in social studies, who also enjoys tutoring other subjects such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, language arts, and science. After working as both a high school teacher as well as a tutoring for two well-known national supplemental education corporations, I have learned that there is no substitute for intensive, hands-on interactive and collaborative learning when it comes to achieving academic success. As a professionally trained actor, I also appreciate the reality that students are much more likely to be engaged in lessons and other activities when they are enjoying themselves and having fun. To achieve that end, I employ a lively, energetic approach when tutoring. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing students become successful in their academic endeavors.

I look forward to the opportunity to help your child become a more successful student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

This is my personal favorite tutoring subject. I have been tutoring Algebra for approximately 5 years.

American History

American History has essentially been a life-long obsession with me. In fact, my first guest-lecturing venture was as a 9 year-old in elementary school. Since then, I have lectured on various historical topics at both the secondary and university academic levels as an instructor while expanding and enriching my own personal awareness and knowledge.

Geometry

Although geometry has a traditional reputation of being one of the more challenging math courses, it's never seemed that way to me. When properly broken down into the fundamentals, and infused with concrete, real-world examples, it can actually be quite a fun subject.

Grammar

I have solid verbal and written communication skills which have been honed through years of academic research, professional utilization, and theatrical experience.

Prealgebra

I'm pretty well versed in all mathematics fundamentals. Algebraic topics are my favorite tutoring subjects.

Public Speaking

My academic and professional backgrounds include training and stints in radio broadcasting. I also received professional training as a stage and film actor. Combined with teaching experience, I've spent the majority of my life in activities which require frequent public speaking.

SAT Math

I re-took the updated SAT in 2007 as a prerequisite for teaching at a supplemental education center. My scores were: 770-Math, 710-Reading, and 720-Writing. These scores provide empirical evidence of the competency and subject mastery necessary to instruct preparatory test-taking skills.

SAT Reading

I re-took the updated SAT in 2007 as a prerequisite for teaching at a supplemental education center. My scores were: 770-Math, 710-Reading, and 720-Writing. These scores provide empirical evidence of the competency and subject mastery necessary to instruct preparatory test-taking skills.

Soccer

I am a life-long player with experience at collegiate level competition.

Social Studies

I am a licensed social studies teacher, and have taught US/World History, Government, Economics, and Geography at the high school level.

Study Skills

Experienced in SQ3R reading, Cornell note-taking study skills techniques, and objective test-taking strategies.

Tennis

I am a USTA rated 4.0 level competitor. I am winner of USTA and non-sanctioned Doubles titles in California and Indiana.

Theatre

I am a working actor and director. I am experienced in both stage and on-camera settings. My professional training was received at Carolyne Barry Creative in Hollywood, CA.

Video Production

I earned a B.A. in Telecommunications at Indiana University, with courses in video production. In addition, I have also been involved with video production at several central Indiana community theaters.

Patient and engaging tutor who recognized my daughter's problems with Algebra 2. — Todd tutored my daughter after a couple of dismal quiz scores showed she was ill prepared for Algebra 2. She came into the tutoring session frightened, stressed, and unable to concentrate on even simple concepts. Todd was non-threatening, kind, and patient. His manner and approach were calming. He explained the concepts in a manner she found easy to comprehend. He identified her pattern of errors ...
