My name is Ginger. If chosen as your tutor, I will bring to your session(s) 18 years of classroom experience teaching students from grades 7 through 12. My main areas of certification are Earth Space (Geology and Astronomy), Biology, General Science (which covers physical science and junior high science), and Chemistry. I have both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Secondary Science Education. I am current on my Virtus training, which is required by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in order to work with children, and have passed criminal history checks also for the Archdiocese. In the past several years, I have attended conferences on using iPads in the classroom and a week long session in Texas at the Dinah Zike Academy learning to use Foldables as study tools in all classes.
I have tutored students throughout my 18 years of teaching and worked as a tutor at the university prior to graduating. I have experience working with students at all levels and various stages of needs. While at the public schools, I taught the 'Gifted &Talented' students in addition to those students with learning needs and IEP's. My teaching methods vary depending on the needs of the individual I am working with. I feel it is important to use a hands on approach when possible and to relate the subject matter being covered to some aspect of real life to make it more concrete for the student.
In addition to tutoring students in science, I have also tutored students in health, English, algebra, and elementary subjects. I look forward to working with students both at the junior high/high school level and elementary level as well. Hello All!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed a 5 credit hour upper level Botany class while obtaining my bachelor's degree in Secondary Ed. Science. I have also taught a 9 week elective class in botany while employed for by a public school. Over the last 19 years of teaching general science to middle schoolers, I have always included a unit on botany within our biology focus.
I am certified 5-12 in the State of Indiana in General Science, Earth - Space Science, Biology, and Chemistry. I have passed all State tests in General Subject topics to receive my license. As such, I feel I am more than qualified to assist students at the elementary levels. My background experience of 18 years in junior high has helped me create many hands on tools for study aids at all levels. In the past, I have served on state boards to help re-write science standards for Indiana and have also been an editor for one of the leading textbook companies for their Indiana edition science book.
I have completed a 5 credit hour 300 level Genetics class at the university level and have taught genetics in a middle and high school general science/biology class for 18 years.
Currently, I am teaching high school biology and anatomy/physiology. Both have required teaching a unit in genetics.
I am a huge believer in the thought that the more you interact with the subject matter, the better you learn it. As such, I attended a week-long workshop several summers back at the Dinah Zike Academy in Comfort, Texas to learn first hand from the creator(s) of Foldables, an interactive, 3D study tool that increases student interaction with content and allows for easy review for testing. I have successfully used Foldables in my classroom for the past several years at both the junior high and high school level. In addition to use in my classroom, I have presented workshops to teachers throughout the state of Indiana on the use of Foldables in the classroom as independent study tools and as part of an Interactive Notebook or a stand alone creative project. As technology has become more readily available to students, I have worked many online tools into my repertoire of study tools, including the use of iPads and apps in the classroom. To assist in this implementation, I attended an IPad Academy in Chicago which focused solely on the use of iPads by students and teachers in the classroom at all levels.
