Ball State University (Elementary Education)
I am currently in my sixth year of teaching. I have taught three years of 4th grade, one year of 3rd grade, and two years of 6th grade. My passion and enthusiasm for teaching drives my instruction and teaching techniques. I use kinesthetic teaching techniques, collaborative group work, and project-based learning in the classroom. In my one-on-one tutoring experiences, this translates into individualized instruction that works closely within a student's preferred learning methods.
I have tutored various grade levels, ranging from 2nd to 7th grades. I am certified to teach grades K-6, and I am willing to tutor through the 8th grade as well. My favorite areas to teach and tutor in are the Humanities (English, Reading, Social Studies) and Math. I have access to teaching and practice materials of my own, or I can help with homework and practice materials of the student's supply.
Math tutoring is where I first got started with the teaching profession. Throughout high school, I used a tutor to support me in my academic career. I realized how much this helped once I got to college, so I worked with elementary math students in the AmeriCorps community service outreach program offered through Ball State. During my student teaching, I led a group of teachers through an in-service training on the various uses of math manipulatives. Once I became a certified teacher, I was able to teach my students math concepts and then continue to spiral through the concepts throughout the year to ensure a continued understanding of the math processes.
Currently I am teaching 6th grade Humanities, and I am finding that this is a true passion of mine. I really love connecting literature with writing by using mentor texts to drive instruction. Being able to connect Social Students elements like history and geography makes it even more meaningful! I have my own library of published children's books and young adult books that make it possible to expose my students to many different writing styles and genres. I prefer to teach grammar through mentor texts and typically only use activity sheets as practice once a concept has been taught and played with. I strongly feel that the best way to learn grammar is through pulling good examples from published works.
Since I have taught in multiple grade levels, I have different experiences to draw from in determining how a student best learns and communicates. My teaching style revolves around the gradual release process of "I do, we do, you do". This means that I appreciate and understand the importance of making expectations of end results clear. I do this by modeling what should be done, then practicing the concept together, and then only when a student is ready, releasing him or her to complete a task independently.
I love having the opportunity to help a student grow in their journey of becoming a life-long learner, and I look forward to meeting with you and your child to discuss how we can work together to achieve this. Our first meeting will be a free meet-and-greet where we discuss your goals for your child and set up a plan for how to reach these goals. I look forward to hearing from you and getting started! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
