I've been an international TESOL instructor for about 12 years, teaching primarily graduate and undergraduate students at a university in Wuhan, China and for a Master's preparation program for students seeking to study abroad in the UK. In addition, I've spent several years teaching ESL students in public and charter schools. Though I teach all four language skills, reading/writing, listening/speaking, I enjoy teaching students to speak English most of all. In all cases, my preference is to bring all four skills to use, no matter the particular skill that's being concentrated on.
When teaching spoken English I prefer to work in groups of 4-5 students and I will adjust the cost per student downward to better accommodate the study group. Group arrangements for spoken English tutoring are far more effective and can reduce the cost per student enough to allow for more tutoring time when needed. Performance and social interaction are emphasized so that public speaking becomes more natural to the student.
My past experience informs me that most second language learners will have difficulty in learning to speak extemporaneously, that is, on the spot or without preparation in advance. Students will tend to translate into their native language first and then respond in their second language. Class exercises are designed to move students past this blocking of communications flow and allow them to formulate verbal responses directly in the second language__ no translation required. As a result, responses will be faster and more “native like” in structure and language use.
Reading and writing tutoring can be done to a degree by correspondence over the internet, but some one to one or group interaction would likely be beneficial for most students. Likewise, listening and speaking can be arranged via Skype, but I strongly recommend forming a small work group that meets as often as possible. There's no substitute for time spent in active and interesting interaction using your second language in meaningful communication. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching TESOL at the university level since 2003 and have a Master's in TESOL from the University of New Mexico. I prepared students for IELTS and TOEFL while teaching at a university in Wuhan, China.
