About Michelle

I am a certified special education teacher with over 20 years teaching experience. I currently teach at the middle school level, but I am certified and comfortable teaching all grade levels. I spent over 10 years teaching at the elementary level. My passion is teaching reading - especially with students who struggle. I have developed a multi-faceted approach which includes phonics (decoding and encoding), sight words, fluency, and comprehension of various types of texts. I work with students with learning disabilities, mild disabilities, on the autism spectrum, and those learning English. Reading is my passion, but I am able to tutor in other subjects as well up to the eighth grade level. I am very patient and resilient with all types of learners - always looking for ways to help my students learn. I am a certified special education teacher with over 20 years teaching experience. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher and I currently teach students with ADD/ADHD. I have 21 years of teaching experience.

Aspergers

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher and I currently teach students with a diagnosis of Asperger's. I have 21 years of teaching experience and have worked with many students with Asperger's syndrome.

Autism

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher and I currently teach many students on the autism spectrum. The students I teach now are verbal and participate in some general education. I have worked with non-verbal and more severe autistic students as well.

Dyslexia

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher and I currently teach students with learning disabilities. The public school system does not label students as "dyslexic". That is a medical diagnosis. My education at the University of Kansas for my master's degree focused on teaching students with learning disabilities. This is my area of expertise.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher. I have taught in the public elementary school setting for 14 years. I have co-taught in inclusive general education classroom as well as instructed in the self-contained small group setting. I have also tutored many students at the elementary level.

Phonics

I currently teach 4 reading classes at the 7th and 8th grade level. I have been trained in the Wilson Reading program and currently it as the phonics piece of my reading curriculum. I have been teaching reading using Wilson Reading for 10 years. I am also a member of the Wilson Reading community.

Special Needs

I am a certified mild disabilities teacher and I currently teach students various disabilities. My certification ranges from preschool to 12th grade. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade reading/language arts in a self-contained setting. I have also co-taught in general education classrooms. I have also completed coursework at the graduate level for an intense interventions license but have yet to complete the student teaching piece of it. I service students with learning disabilities, mild and moderate cognitive disabilities, other health impairments, speech/language disabilities, and students on the autism spectrum.
