About Melissa

My career has focused on working with children in both educational and therapeutic settings. I work with students to identify strengths and challenges and support educational goals through a variety of approaches. It is important to reach a child at their developmental level and create authentic learning experiences.

I have specialized in working with pre-school through 4th grade students. In addition to tutoring students from a typical school setting, I have begun work on my second Master's Degree in Special Education-Mild Intervention. I enjoy getting to know a child and their interests while incorporating state educational standards. My Music Therapy degree also allows me to tutor students in piano lessons. I look forward to hearing from you and I appreciate your consideration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with a variety of Special Education students in group and one to one settings. I am very familiar with the needs of a child diagnosed with ADD/ADHD and interventions to help with educational goals. I have begun work on my second Master's Degree in Special Education-Mild Intervention.

Aspergers

I have worked as a therapist and teacher with children diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. Two of my piano students had this diagnosis and I got to know their challenges as well as the family's. I am familiar with the characteristics of Aspergers and can create effective teaching techniques to work towards academic goals. In addition, I am an Indiana Certified Teacher, Board Certified Music Therapist and have worked as a Special Education Coordinator. I am working towards a second Master’s Degree in Special Education through Indiana University.

Autism

My qualifications to work with children diagnosed along the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) involves almost 10 years providing both education and therapy to this population. I am familiar with the characteristics and causes of ASD. I have created and used effective educational interventions (including IEP’s) to assist in classrooms. I was the Special Education Coordinator for Renaissance Academy in LaPorte, IN., during the 2007-08 school year. Finally, I have started work towards a second Master’s Degree in Special Education through Indiana University.

Dyslexia

I have my Master's Degree in Elementary Education, which included reading theory, materials and methods. In addition, I have completed graduate level Special Education courses, focusing on assessment and mild handicaps. I have experience working with children diagnosed with special needs/reading difficulties as well as typical, school-aged children. Finally, I served as Special Education Coordinator for a Charter School and am familiar with the IEP process.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have specialized in teaching Pre-K through 4th grade students. In addition to students in a typical school setting, I am working towards my second Master's Degree in Special Education. I am an Indiana certified elementary teacher and have taught in public, private, and therapeutic schools.

General Music

My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor's of Music with a major in Music Therapy. My primary instrument is piano, but I also have basic knowledge of a variety of other instruments. Many music and educational goals can be worked on by using music as a medium. I am a Board Certified Music Therapist.

Piano

I have played piano since first grade and believe it is a valuable and wonderful talent to have. My qualifications to teach piano includes classical piano training and graduating from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s in Music, Music Therapy Major. Through Music Therapy techniques, I create positive, success-oriented experiences in creative ways. I have taught piano to all levels of students as young as three years old. In addition, my Master’s Degree in Education reinforces my teaching skills. Lessons would support goals of the student, such as learning to read music, playing a certain style, or simply playing for enjoyment.

Reading

I am an Elementary Certified Teacher through the state of Indiana. I was also very fortunate to spend a school year of student teaching with a seasoned First Grade Teacher in a well-respected private school in Cleveland, OH. I was able to participate and learn state-of-the-art approaches and techniques to engage students in the reading process and have utilized them since that time.

Special Needs

My qualifications to work with adult and child students diagnosed with Special Needs involves over 20 years of professional work. This work has included the mental, physical and emotional challenges this population presents. I am very comfortable working with IEP’s for school age children and requirements of IDEA for older, transitional students. I have worked as a Special Education Coordinator and have started work towards a second Master’s Degree in Special Education through Indiana University.

Study Skills

My qualifications to assist with study skills include knowing strategies for effective learning. Critical skills include organizing, learning and retaining information, reading and attention to tasks, and concentration. I think that different students have different learning styles and believe in finding effective strategies to apply to learning. I completed my Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from John Carroll University in 1999. I have taught in a variety of public, private, and therapeutic school settings since that time.

Voice (Music)

I received a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Music Therapy from Western Michigan University in 1989. This curriculum required a one semester voice class as well as 4 semesters of vocal performance with a formal chorus. I sang in the alto section and singing has been an ongoing skill in my work as a Music Therapist with a variety of clients.
