My background in education includes three years as a teacher in grades 9 and 11 covering the subjects of English (literature) and U.S. History in a public school in Indiana and two years in a private out of state school teaching grades 5, 7 and 8 and again Language Arts subjects (reading development, grammar, and writing). After that, I worked for a number of years in business, but always retained an interest in the field of education as demonstrated later by several years of private tutoring Language Arts (writing, reading and spelling development) specifically ages 8 through 10. My approach in tutoring includes first determining how a student learns best. Most individuals lean towards being visual learners or absorb information best through hearing. Based on that insight, learning tools would involve hands-on interactive materials such as word sight cards if vocabulary or spelling improvement is the goal or verbal repetition if a student is hearing-centered. In either situation, the goal is to set the objective for each session, include interactive materials and a review at the end if appropriate. Also, much of my teaching experience has been focused in writing which I particularly enjoy. The approach is one of learning how to brainstorm ideas, which is not always as easy as it sounds, determining how to develop a main idea, next build 3 or 4 details that best support that idea and tying the paragraph together at the end with either a "wow" closing or a succinct repeat of the paragraph.
For the past ten years I was employed as a substitute teacher by Michigan City, IN, area schools and have focused on ages k through 3, although I also worked with students in grades 4 and 5. In this position, all elementary level subjects were covered. My interest in this age group centered on students generally having a spark for learning new things and a desire to be creative and have fun during the process.
Finally, my credentials include a B.A. in English Education and a M.A. in Education. I hold an Indiana Teaching Certification in the subjects of English (Language Arts) and U.S. history. Thank you and I look forward to assisting you with your goals.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
