Salvete, discipuli! My name is Lisa, and I am a stay-at-home mom as well as a teacher and tutor who loves working with students. My particular subject specialty is Latin, which I believe is very valuable for promoting logical thinking because of the attention to detail it requires in its many grammatical forms. I love helping students succeed, understanding that it truly is possible to succeed even in the face of seemingly impossible forms and concepts, that with some patience and willingness these concepts really do make sense, and that Latin can be a lot of fun! I have several years of experience teaching Latin to both online group classes and individual students and I would love to work with you! I am also experienced in teaching English grammar, helping with writing, and teaching a variety of subjects at the elementary level.

Greek,

Greek

As a classics major in college, I learned classical Greek structure and grammar and then took advanced courses in Survey of Greek Prose and Plato's Ion in the original Greek. My intermediate Greek studies also included reading the Early Christian Fathers and I have spent some time reading the Greek New Testament as well. I believe Greek is a valuable language to learn because it provides an opportunity to learn many intricacies of grammar and language structure that do not exist in English, and promotes discipline both through the amount of dedication required to learn it and the strong sense of order within it. I am happy to provide instruction in this language to anyone interested, or to assist any aspiring Greek scholar finding himself in need of assistance to get through a class.
Latin,

Latin

I studied Latin extensively throughout high school and college and am quite fascinated with this language. Firstly, its grammar is more specific and thorough than English grammar, so that learning it requires attention to detail and helps develop correct thinking skills. Secondly, it was traditionally the universal language of the Western intellectual tradition, so that studying it opens a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience to students. I have taught Latin to middle- and high-school students and am happy to work with anyone wishing to learn the language or seeking extra help.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

I have been a grader of student papers for a number of years. I have reviewed papers and provided feedback regarding content, paragraph structure, clarity, writing fluency, organization, grammar, and language mechanics.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with K-6 students in various capacities, most notably through a brief stint as a classroom teacher for a multi-grade K-3 classroom at a small school, but also in various volunteering and tutoring capacities. My experience has shown that children in this age group are very intelligent and ask surprisingly good questions - they are capable of learning more than we think they are, if only they are placed in a non-threatening, encouraging situation where they are understood and respected and can have their particular needs addressed. My goal in tutoring this age group is to be firm yet gentle, giving them plenty of encouragement and attention, and making every effort to help them understand what they don't.
Phonics,

Phonics

Having worked with young children in various capacities over the years, I am familiar with the usual pedagogy of phonics, which consists of learning to read by learning letter sounds-individual letters, vowel diphthongs such as "oa" and "ai," and common silent letter patterns such "kn" and "ight." Children who struggle with reading often benefit from one-on-one coaching in stringing the letters together to pronounce the words.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Through my own experience both in school and as a teacher/tutor, I am well aware that different students have different learning styles and there is no one best way to learn. However, there are some methods that tend to work better than others- for example, the multiplication tables generally must be memorized to be learned, there is no creative substitute for that. Many students are unsure about how to proceed learning a subject and benefit from guidance from someone who has been in a similar position, or someone more familiar with the subject who can show them which points are most important and how they relate to each other. My work with homeschoolers includes provides guidance in how to succeed, addressing each student's particular strengths and weaknesses to encourage mastery and progress.

History

Classics,

Classics

As a classics major in college, I studied the Latin and Greek languages and also took several courses about the classical world and its culture, such as Classical Mythology, Ancient Greek Philosophy, History of Ancient Greece, Theater History, and Art Appreciation. These civilizations are valuable to know about because it was from them that the whole of Western civilization as we know it developed and spread throughout the Western world. My particular specialty is in the Latin language, which I have been teaching for a number of years, and which truly promotes logical thinking, attention to detail, and appreciation of the facets of language as no other language can do.

Sewing

Sewing

As a seamstress, I am accomplished in garment construction (especially skirts, jumpers, dress jackets, and pajamas) and quilting, as well as other household objects such as pillowcases on the sewing machine. I am also good at hand sewing, which is especially of value for mending, hemming, adding buttons. In addition, I do counted cross-stitching. I am happy to provide sewing lessons to girls of any age who wish to learn a traditional "womanly" skill that remains most valuable.

Lisa is considerate

Lisa took the important time to establish how much new information, I will be comfortably able to retain in each lesson. She makes certain I am ready to move on before introducing new vocabulary.

Nice Tutor

We decided online lessons are not a good fit for beginner sewing. Lisa was nice.
