About AMY

My love of education and the English language started early when I spent my summers off teaching my stuffed animals. As a young wife and mother, I stayed home and homeschooled our four children (two of them through graduation—the other two entered public school in 2007), though the economy did not allow me to always stay home. I have worked with all ages in the public school system as a substitute teacher and resource aide in an English and Biology classroom.
I also worked with our afterschool program as a tutor for middle and high schoolers.

When I went back to college, it was to study English and education. During my time at IUS, I worked in The Writing Center with adult students, helping them with their writing assignments and editing their work. I also presented seminars to IUS freshmen concerning The Writing Center and conducted writing seminars to freshman English classes. My master of education degree is in literacy, language, and culture. I love to share what I have learned, love to learn from others, and I enjoy helping others succeed.

Reading and writing are things that I understand and love; however, I know that many do not feel the way I do. I like to help others find their own way by expanding on personal interests and using these to improve their skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

My education includes: three undergraduate credit hours in special education accommodations and three graduate hours specifically with autism accommodations/learning styles/ABA. I have work experience with the direct care/support/education of families with children with autism, and family experience of a brother with autism.
