I am a Math GEEK!!! Yes, I admit it! I do, however, meet students where THEY are in their math abilities, their confidence level and their "likeability" of the subject. We all have our strengths and areas to improve; students do need basic math skills to graduate and to function in life, then advanced skills to score well on college placement exams. My greatest joys and accomplishments are when students can feel that light bulb turn on in their minds - understanding what they previously found confusing.

Every year, I've proven to lead at least one student, from struggling and not liking math, to being the highest scorer in the class on tests. While tutoring, I cater and modify my teaching style to match the learning style of the student, which allows for quick advancement of the subject!

I am a certified middle and high school math teacher in my 19th year of experience, teaching topics in the categories of AP Calculus, Precalculus, College Algebra (dual-credit), Geometry, Algebra 2, Algebra 1, Pre-algebra. I have successfully led elementary students to gain confidence in their study of math, as well as lead high school students to 100+ points' improvement on their SAT Math score.

I vividly remember how it felt to "hit the wall" in math and throw my hands up in the air and wonder how I would ever learn what I needed to be successful. With help from great people, I graduated with high honors. I have paid it forward to help others do the same in the past. I know I can help you, too!

I have been helping students here in Laporte for 9 of the 10 years I have lived here in Laporte, in addition to 5 more years of tutoring elementary math students. I have a two-fold process where I can help you be more efficient with practicing your flashcards and with the broader concepts at the same time.

Religion

I enjoy reading about detailed teachings of specific topics in religion, and conversing about topics of depth. I have taught in religious education programs, co-led Bible studies, and been a part of the youth group teams leaders in three church communities in four towns I have lived in for 19 years. Also, I have prepared people for confirmation in three of those communities.

Algebra 1

I have helped high school seniors as well as graduates to prepare for tests to get into a college course of their choice and to apply to the military academies. I may not be available on Friday mornings, but we may be able to work something out with both of our work schedules.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

In addition, I have been told by many alumni and principals that I am good and meeting students where they are and bringing them along to where they need/want to be.
Calculus,

Calculus

My students' average score two years ago on the AP Calculus exam was 4.5 on a 5-point scale. I have been reading additional texts in the last 6 years to help students understand better that their struggles with calculus are the same as the brightest minds on the planet in the times of Newton and Leibniz. I am certain that I can help you improve your understanding of the basic principles as well as important details and methods for solving the most intricate of assigned exercises. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Geometry,

Geometry

I have taught geometry for over 12 years, including three different standard courses and three different Honors Geometry courses. My students have been those who struggle in geometry day-to-day as well as those who strive to understand concepts more richly in the highest Geometry courses.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have taught Precalculus in three different math programs and have tutored students in three other math programs. My students range from those who struggle day-to-day to those who seek to excel in the very challenging honors precalculus course for elite college-prep programs.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I have taught SAT Math prep for over 16 years for students in ten different math programs preparing them for college. My students range from those who struggle day-to-day in mathematics to those who seek to excel in the very challenging honors courses in elite college-prep programs. In addition, I have coached high school graduates who wanted to score higher on the Purdue University placement exam for mathematics for the pre-medicine program.

ACT Math

This past spring, I had a student score 800 on the SAT Math, up from his prior score in the 700s, as well as helping other students who struggled to get in the mid-400s improve their scores by 10% or better to rise above the 500 mark. And I have had many others improve by that 10%-or-better margin in between those extremes as well. Two years before, I had one student improve her score by 100 points on the math section, and her sister followed suit the following fall. Those students who improved the most also put forth maximum effort and practiced much on their own. I hope I can help your daughter perform better on both Math and Science.

I have successfully taught this course for a couple of years to advanced high school students at my current school. The topics in discrete mathematics are able to be understood following an algebra 2 course. Topics include logic, sets, functions, integers, counting, probability, relations, and graphs.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I am currently taking my graduate certificate in pure mathematics. I have taught a discrete math course for two years consisting of the same concepts as an undergrad course of the same name to accelerated math students in my current high school. I can multitask well when teaching mathematics: I taught this course during the same class periods while simultaneously teaching Euclid's "Elements" of geometry.

Quentin worked well with my children

Quentin was thorough, patient and helped my children understand the concepts. He guided them through the problems and helped them find the answers themselves. There were many "aha" moments. We will be turning to him again for help.

Detailed and Approachable

Quentin took the extra time to explain to me directly what he observed my son doing that was confusing him and what approach to take to correct it. He is also very friendly and approachable which is a huge help with teenagers that are already stressed and self conscious because they are struggling.

Terrific tutor!

Quentin was terrific! Great communication and flexibility. Jonas really enjoyed his teaching style and felt a great sense of ease asking questions. We look forward to more tutoring and watching Jonas's confidence with Geometry grow.
