About Samuel

My name is Sam, I am a biologist from Bakersfield, CA. I have used my education to work as a biological surveyor for both the National Parks Service and private sectors, a laboratory research assistant and even a cellar technician for a major craft brewery. I have a deep love for science and nature, and spend a great deal of my free time outdoors hiking and climbing. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my love of science with others through learning and conversation, and tutoring has been a great platform for me to do just that.
I have been tutoring math and science since I was a freshman in high school, and as such have a great deal of experience teaching hard subjects one on one or in small groups. In addition to tutoring privately, I worked as a math and science instructor at a private junior college teaching algebra, chemistry and natural science. My history as a researcher taught me to organize my time and information well, and I believe these skills will benefit my students greatly.

I have experience tutoring nearly all levels of math through calculus in one on one sessions. I have also catered to the needs of a wide variety of students during my time as a college math instructor. I have a strong understanding of how math applies to real world and scientific applications. My own math education was augmented by a year as a physics major in college, and I have experience with both the AB and BC Calculus Advanced Placement Exams.

I have worked in many sectors of the biology field, and can talk to the critical role of science in those positions. My research experience focused on the physiology and ecology of a local plant ecosystem, the chaparral. I have worked on cutting edge studies from concept through execution and write up. My Biology degree focused strongly on scientific writing and reading of technical documents, and I would be happy to share those skill with my students as well.

I look forward to having an opportunity to help others succeed in math and science. I believe that my experiences both as an educator and a working biologist give me a great deal to share with potential students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored many students in Algebra since starting as a high school student. I have taught algebra at the college level in an accelerated format multiple times, and I am very familiar with the subject. I am particularly fond of word problems and real world applications, as these lend themselves very well to algebra and help a student to see its value.

Biology

I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology, and have worked in the field as a research assistant, community college instructor, and National Parks Service surveyor. I have been tutoring math and science for over a decade, and have helped many students improve their grades, confidence and test taking skills.

Botany

I worked as a Laboratory Research Assistant in a Biology lab studying the physiology and ecology of Chaparral shrubs in the Angeles National Forest for 4 years. I took coursework specifically focused on plant anatomy, function and diversity.

Prealgebra
