About Justin

Bio

Sorry about the lame tagline, but I'm kind of a lame dude! :) My name is Justin (Mr. K. to my students) and I've been a math teacher since 2006. I love working with students and seeing their faces when something clicks. Though I don't get paid much, I find my job extremely rewarding. My favorite areas of math to teach range from middle school levels through Algebra; however, I'm very comfortable helping with ANY mathematical topic. I'm also very comfortable with computer software questions....

I love working with students and seeing their faces when something clicks. Though I don't get paid much, I find my job extremely rewarding. My favorite areas of math to teach range from middle school levels through Algebra; however, I'm very comfortable helping with ANY mathematical topic. I'm also very comfortable with computer software questions. I've worked with students of all ages [K-12 and college] thanks to my employment a local community college, a nation-wide tutoring company, and countless one-on-one tutoring opportunities.

Aside from being a math teacher, I'm a husband (married 7/7/7), a father (daughter born 1/1/11), and a geek. I love technology, Star Wars, sports (baseball is my favorite, following by bowling, football, hockey, and basketball). I grew up just a short drive from Chicago so I'm a die-hard Cubs fan.

When I have free time, I'm usually in front of a computer/tablet, behind a good book, playing games with family, or just relaxing. However, I constantly try to stay busy. I tutor numerous students throughout the school year and summer.

One thing that sets me apart from a lot of students is my willingness to do online tutoring using Google Hangouts, Skype, or other virtual meeting software. I'd be happy to talk with you about my online tutoring/teaching experiences.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

Microsoft PowerPoint,

Microsoft PowerPoint

I've been using PowerPoint for as long as I can remember. My biggest problem is when I go for perfection on animation timings! I've been told that I'm a wizard with PowerPoint so just ask away. FYI: I'm also familiar with quite a few FREE online presentation services.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I love Word! I don't care what anybody says about Microsoft, Word just keeps getting better and better. I love to take boring documents and make them pop. I know many tips and tricks and I love to share what I find!

Computer

General Computer,

General Computer

My general computer knowledge was born when I was 8 or 9 years old. My father was a graphic designer so he always had a computer around and upgraded frequently. I got to play with, break, and fix his old machines. I've taken a number of computer classes and am certified through Project Lead the Way to teach Computer Science. When there's something to learn, I learn it.
Microsoft Outlook,

Microsoft Outlook

Just as with Microsoft Office, I'm familiar with it's components. I use Outlook on a daily basis. I'm fine with adding multiple accounts and adding RSS feeds. No problem!

Elementary (K-6th)

Though my license is for 6th to 12th grade, I'm extremely comfortable with the earlier grades. I tutor at a local establishment and have been certified in "essential math", which services kindergarten to eight grade. I also have been certified in "academic reading".
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

My teaching license is 6-12 but I also got extremely high scores on my Praxis I test which covered elementary math. I also taught math at Learning Centers to students aged 5 to 18 [and some adult learners as well]. I work with my the elementary in my district to ensure learning benchmarks are being hit.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a teacher, I have to pass tests and classes but a lot of that information fades away. I had to get qualified to teach reading at a Learning Center so I'm confident in my phonics skills. It doesn't hurt that my wife is an elementary teacher and we have a 2-year old daughter who we are teaching to read.

As a middle school through college teacher, I know what it takes to succeed in school and life. I worked at Learning Centers and was qualified to teach the study skills class. I've worked with students on how to become better students both individually and in groups.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I love Algebra! It's fun to teach because there are so many ways to do most problems. I've spent a lot of time in the past year getting to know what students need to know for the ECA. The majority of my students passed because they were very prepared and knew exactly what to expect.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught math023, math035, and math043 at Ivy Tech Community College. These classes are sub-100 level because they aren't at the "college" level. These basically cover middle school through parts of pre-calculus. I also aced the Algebra 2 test on here :).

Great tutor and even helped fix my computer screen.

Justin was a great help with learning excel and word. He is very patient and willing to cover anything about the computer and programs you have questions about. He even fixed my computer screen. It was REALLY dark and hard to see. He asked if he could try to fix it and I said "Please do." It's ALOT easier to use. Thanks Justin for ALL your help.

Very flexible and knowledgeable

Justin has been great. My son is in algebra 1 and is working with him via Skype. He used to dread the homework but now knows if he is getting confused he can talk to Justin about it. His whole attitude towards this class has changed. Justin has gotten to know him very quickly and has adapted his teaching style to help. He makes sure my son is involved in the problems they are doing and Drew feels free to ask lots of questions. This constant dialog is impossible at school. Thanks Justin!
