About Cheryl

I have a degrees from two well respected universities (IU and IWU). I was an educator in the Language Arts Dept. at Oakland City University for three years. I have a current Indiana teaching K-8 license with reading specialist endorsement added. I have taught many years doing intervention work in several public schools.

I believe that my passion and experience in teaching/tutoring, flexible work hours, along with my strong diversity of licensing makes me a strong candidate to serve and help your child learn. You will find that I am of good moral character, have solid leadership skills, and varied communication skills. I have experience in teaching ESL students. My command of phonics also helps me to develop strong readers and writers.

My teaching style uses research-based high quality instruction. If the students’ responses are limited I would ask them a question to deepen their response in understanding of the text, For example; I’d ask, “how is your experience the same or what in your life made you see it this way?” Personal response is one of many quality tools to help readers. In the task of writing I find “giving an image to work toward” as they write literary essays are another very effective tool to use. This will help mixed motive students to emulate the essays written by some of the best essayists. The students will need to illustrate, defend, and extend upon their claims. How will I achieve this in the class. In the past, I do what is called a daily journal writing. I write a prompt, the student writes their story. Later I teach editing, then they rewrite the story as a final draft. I also do a varied version of this called “readers spotlight” which helps me evaluate their comprehension skills.

My interests are in teaching Reading, Writing, and Math fundamental skill-sets. There is nothing more exciting than to watch a student blossom and find the joy that comes from the passion of being able to express their creative thoughts; then to have those same students share those thoughts with others. How much fun is it to see the expressions on their faces when they discover that they really can do their best!

My Philosophy: The skills or attributes that I believe are necessary to be an outstanding teacher/tutor are all based on three areas; the teacher’s attitude, the teacher’s organization skills, and the teacher’s education, as well as, his/her natural ability to teach. I believe that I have these skills.

Attitude comes first, I must be positive, polite, and respectful to others. Learning after all needs to be a pleasant experience for everyone involved. An attitude of gratitude will keep the climate of my class sessions a catalyst for learning. I have a welcoming attitude of willingness to form relationships with other teachers, parents, and community and I will encourage a connection with the students’ support team. I often contact the primary teachers during the school year and touch base with them if necessary.

My attitude also encompasses having a sense of humor, cheerfulness, and optimistic view point because as a teacher I will experience many changes in my class. For example, sometimes when I sing or laugh during class my students are put at ease. It can change the day for everyone.

Secondly, organizational skills are necessary for not only keeping the class session running smoothly ,but to keep everyone on task. Organization skills give me the maximum time to teach. I like to cultivate good habits within my students, so I model and speak about good study habits with my students.
I plan a well-balanced curriculum ahead of time; so I can create a relaxed atmosphere for the students, this will allow them to concentrate better. An atmosphere of concentration comes from the leadership, which is me, the lead teacher.

In addition, I plan well and have the ability to set realistic goals for my students. I often make concise, firm directives because this will help my students focus well. Firm boundaries are set by consistency. I find that this will instill confidence in my students. Fairness also must be factored into the equation; this can be planned by utilizing a system that all students are able to achieve their goals. I am aware and address different students learning styles. Many of my students will learn well from activity games; I often do"hands-on " learning activities.

Last, the education of the teacher is necessary to be an outstanding teacher. Education is not just schooling; it is also mentored and taught or caught by experience. I update often and check on emerging research; as well as, the newest methods of teaching. I display the willingness to listen well, seek out new skills, and find better ways of doing a task. Last but not least, education is making mistakes, acknowledging those mistakes, and trying to learn from them. Many students I tutor feel as though they need to not make mistakes. I express to them that the mistake if a learning tool.

I am looking forward to connecting with you at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I will provide a paper trail of many satisfied parents that have utilized my services since 2000 if you should request them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I taught youth group and Bible for years and I can provide a letter from my pastor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have passed all requirements for the state of Indiana and hold a current teaching license. I have a Highly Qualified teacher status.

I taught first and second grades. I can provide letters from parents and co-workers.

Praxis

I have a highly qualified teacher status and have taken all of the Praxis tests and extra tests (20300,10011,10014) to achieve my goals.
I had to study hard and get proficient in test taking to pass them; I had to develop study techniques and testing ways to take the Praxis tests well. I understand what it takes to pass them through my own experience with the system. If necessary I have copies of the tests to show my scores.

Public Speaking

I was a Public Speaking educator at Oakland City University. I can provide references upon request.

Study Skills

I currently worked as an interventionist at a Indianapolis school system. I have experience in teaching "study techniques" to many students. My intervention work with students were in the grades of 4, 5, 6, 7,and 8 in math, reading, and writing. I can provide a letter from the principal of the school system.

I was also a full-time remediation teacher at a school for a year in 2007 (helping students in grades 7th and 8th). I can provide a letter of recommendation from the lead teacher.
