Hi, I'm Mel. I am a fourth-year college student in Indianapolis, Indiana. I am working towards a bachelors in software engineering and a minor in computer science. When I first changed my major to software engineering, I had no previous coding experience and found myself struggling to keep up with my classes. It was discouraging seeing all of my classmates doing the projects with ease, while I found myself struggling. Thankful, I was able to finally find my footing, however, this experience also made me realize something. It wasn't that other people weren't struggling, they definitely were. It was the fact that they were struggling and managed to work together to understand what was going on and get through it. That is what I want to be to students- someone who can help them when they are struggling but won't do the work for them.

I have had two years of experience in the software engineering/computer science industry. In 2017, I was chosen to be a participant in a technical boot camp, where students were taught to make web applications in languages such as HTML5, CSS3, Vanilla Javascript and React. Along with this, last summer I was an intern at a tax and accounting company where I was tasked with creating a mobile application for their upcoming conference. Here I used tools such as Android Studio and Java. These experiences have really helped give me a well-rounded set of skills that I am still working to improve.

My goal is to help as many students who felt the same way as me as I can. It's not fun sitting in a classroom afraid of asking for help for fears of not being smart enough. Because of this, I welcome students of any level, especially those who are in Intro to Computer Science classes. Any resources, slides, or pdfs you are able to provide me would be very welcome. Please contact me if you have any questions or if you want to schedule a lesson. Also, if you're working with a language that I do not have listed, please let me know before scheduling and I will try my best to help.

Public Speaking

I was a member of my school's speech and debate team for three years. Here I competed in competitions around the midwest giving speeches on a variety of topics. While this may not be related to software engineering directly, public speaking is something that I use daily.

Computer

CSS,

CSS

I mainly have experience in web development including HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I have built and designed websites using CSS3 and HTML5. I have also created pure CSS images or images made out of only CSS in the past.
Web Design,

Web Design

Most of my personal projects and tasks during my internship, centered around front end and web development. This means that I have a lot of experience with HTML5 and CSS3, along with Bootstrap 4. Because of these previous skills, during my first hackathon, I was tasked with designing the webpage and improving the UI of the entire project. This project led to my team's being awarded the business impact award.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Mel was very helpful with javascript. She was able to simplify the problems I was facing and gave me a good understanding of items I had been struggling with. She made me feel comfortable to ask her any questions and was very patient with me. I will definitely make another tutor session with her.
