About Ryan

I graduated in 2009 from Centerville High School as Salutatorian. I received the Eli Lilly full tuition scholarship and studied Mechanical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. In 2013 I graduated from Rose-Hulman Summa Cum Laude (3.9 GPA) with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

I previously worked full-time as a Senior Business Analyst with ExxonMobil, performing economic modelling and market analysis. Recently, I left ExxonMobil to pursue entrepreneurship.

During high school I was a member of our peer-tutor program for 2 years, where I tutored students in math, science, English and writing. At college, I also supported my fellow classmates in understanding the material and concepts by providing them with help on homework and test preparation.

Throughout my engineering education and professional work experience, I have prided myself on my ability to use any and all available resources to teach myself the required concepts, and then communicate those concepts in a simple, coherent manner.

I strive to help my students not only learn the material, but also "learn how to learn" so that they can confidently seek out the appropriate resources to understand any concept. I will help them learn how to find resources online and better utilize text book and other class resources to ensure understanding.

Often in advanced courses (high school AP or college level), I may not know the solution to a problem immediately, and instead prefer to discover the solution together, with the student. This allows the student to practice the skill of "learning how to learn" while also generating a critical thinking discussion around the problem and concepts involved.

Also, as test results are such a large part of the grade a student receives, I also provide support and tips for improving test taking. I will review the past course exams to try and determine where concepts are not fully understood or detect patterns in types of questions, wording, etc that are causing issues. After understanding the issues, we can then work together to solve it.

Above all, I will strive to meet the needs of all my students and will do everything in my power to ensure success.

Thank you for checking out my profile! Please contact me with any questions or comments!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Computer

I am an engineer by training and have used computers and technology extensively throughout my undergraduate education and professional career.

MATLAB

During my undergraduate engineering education, I took several classes that required proficient use of MATLAB. During group projects involving modelling/ODEs, I was always responsible for the code, both producing it and ensuring my teammates understood the mechanics. Moreover, I've used it for external projects and personal tinkering. I am proficient in other programming languages as well, and so I quickly understood concepts of programming in MATLAB.

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.94 GPA) from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2013 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Rose-Hulman has been ranked the #1 Undergraduate Engineering School by U.S. News and World Report, for 18 years in a row. I have experience tutoring, as I was a peer tutor in high school and college.

Microsoft Excel

6+ years experience with mastery of all advanced features including Visual Basic. Throughout my career I have used Excel to perform accounting, cash flow analysis, and model complex systems.

Study Skills

I was salutatorian in High School with a 4.2 GPA (> 4.0 due to AP classes). I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a 3.9 GPA. Throughout all of my schooling I have been a self starter in terms of scheduling and prioritizing my studies and can help those learn the same techniques that I used.
