About Patricia

I am a lifelong learner, who is passionate about helping students rise and excel academically. As a cum laude graduate, I know the satisfaction and rewards that come from hard work. I offer quality and engaging teaching for children ages 3 - 10 years of age.

I am a past elementary teacher, with experience and knowledge of various curriculums ( Engage New York, Scot Foresmam, Orton-Gillingham, Balanced Literacy, etc). I am experienced in working with students with an IEP.

I strive to ensure that each child's learning experience is happy and healthy. I love children, and want to help prepare them for their best educational futures possible. I specialize in reading, phonics, and comprehension. I am trained in working with early or struggling readers. I have my own set of instructional workbooks, manipulative, tablets, and books. I am all set for your child to have a fun, productive session.

I believe in making math lessons interactive and engaging. I try to make my math sessions a place where the child wants to be.

I exercise classroom reading instruction that supports emergent and struggling readers. As a lifelong learner, I am introspective about my teaching methods, reviewing my teaching process daily. This allows me to look at what has been effective in my teaching strategy to keep, as well as what has not worked and doing away with it. I also believe in my students and I make sure that they know this and feel it.

I believe that the lines of communication should always be open between the teacher/tutor and the parent and students. Teachers/tutors should always make certain that the student understands the objective of each lesson.

If you and your child are ready to soar academically, please contact me, so that we may discuss how I can assist your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I feel that I am qualified to tutor Elementary (k-6), because of my past experience and educational background. In terms of my past experience, I have worked with children between the ages of 5 to 11, and I understand that you must be friendly and approachable, while still remaining professional. I am also patient and have a true desire and interest in working with young people. I began tutoring in 2003 with a not for profit company called Tools of Empowerment. I was responsible for tutoring 8 first graders in all core subject areas. I saw the children's desire to learn, but because they were not given the basic fundamentals, they struggled. After assessing the students, I formulated a success plan for each child, going over it with the child and their parents. In doing this I was able to ensure each students success. I have also earned my masters degree in Elementary Education. My classroom education and student teaching has prepared me to teach and train children in Elementary content areas. I have completed rigorous coursework in pedagogical methods.

Reading

I specialize in early and struggling readers, working to not only improve a students fluency, but also their reading comprehension.

Study Skills

I feel qualified to teach students how to properly study and prepare for a test or quiz, because I took a study skills course In order to learn how to be well prepared for a test. Many of the skills and strategies I have learned and developed were taught to me when I was in high school. In teaching students the correct way to study, I first help them to understand that simply reading the text or material for an hour or so is not enough. I show them that a variety of study methods and strategies are needed in order to be successful in their academic career. One study skill strategy I teach students to incorporate into their study time is to practice with flashcards. This skill allows a student to go over key words, processes, and ideas over and over. Research has shown that repetition helps with memory. Another strategy I show students is how to properly take notes. I show students that in taking notes, they should not just be writing what the teacher says, but that they should also be highlighting key words in their notes, and summarizing text, When students hear that I graduated cum laude, they are more willing to listen to me and take my pointers.
