About Mark

I have been teaching continuously for the past 23 years. Most of my training and experience is in science and math, but I am able to teach many other subjects also. I have taught biology, chemistry, and physical science in public high schools; I have taught practically every high school subject in a home school setting. I have a B.S. in Secondary Science Education and a current Indiana license. In the past, I held licenses in the states of Iowa and New Jersey. My current license is for grades 9-12 in chemistry, biology, physical science, and general science.

I have found ways to present math concepts clearly using a combination of visuals and verbal explanations. I give students many opportunities to practice their math problems during the sessions, and then I give them immediate feedback.

Science is the area of my greatest training and experience. I love it and am able to communicate that to students. I have developed many teaching tools and activities, including 3-D models, brainstorming exercises, directed readings, annotating text, group challenges, written exercises to reinforce learning as well as to check for understanding, and thought-provoking presentations to make subject matter understandable and memorable.

Whatever you need help with, please contact me about it. I am looking forward to hearing from you and working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have a strong reading background, which helped me to do very well on this test back when I was in high school. In recent years, I have had excellent professional training in teaching reading skills to high school students (e.g., Reading Apprenticeship Improving Secondary Education). I can help students understand what to look for in reading passages, know how to eliminate incorrect multiple-choice answers, and be able to deal with the time pressure associated with this test.

Algebra 1

Recently I had the opportunity to be an after-school tutor for Algebra I students at an Accelerated School in Indianapolis, IN. After several weeks of organized lessons, they took their required graduation test in Algebra I, and most of them passed. I have also taught Algebra I in a home-school setting, also with good results.

In high school, I had the standard year of biology; in college, I took another year of general biology as well as semester courses in microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, histology, animal biology, plant biology, and environmental science with field studies. My student teaching experience included both regular and advanced biology. I also have the benefit of a graduate class from the Center for Earth and Environmental Science at IUPUI. Over the years I have used countless curricular materials from publishers and other teachers; I have also developed many of my own presentations, assignments, and assessments.

My chemistry coursework includes a year of high school chemistry, a year of general chemistry in college, followed by a year of organic chemistry, a semester of biochemistry, and 6 graduate credits for a summer chemistry internship at Eli Lilly & Co. I started teaching chemistry as a student teacher and have continued teaching it throughout my teaching career. I have a current Indiana Teacher's License in chemistry.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is an intimidating course for many students, but with great professors, a great textbook, and a great love for the course, I did very well with it; I have also had some real-world experience doing organic synthesis in a chemistry internship for teachers at the Lilly Corporate Center laboratories in Indianapolis, IN. I earned 8 undergraduate semester credits in organic chemistry and 6 graduate credits in the organic chemistry internship. My current teaching license certifications in both chemistry and biology, as well as the course content I have taught, include a significant amount of organic chemistry.

Whether a student needs help with understanding functional groups, molecular properties, or reactions of organic compounds, I can break down material that seems complex into understandable parts, clarifying the differences between one organic process and another.

I have taught reading at all levels from pre-K to high school. I have been trained in Reading Apprenticeship strategies and also have experience with other approaches to teaching reading. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes, and I communicate this enthusiasm to my students.

Years ago I spoke with a hiring manager at a large Indianapolis company who shared with me that a candidate's writing skills played a significant role in the selection process. From that point on, I emphasized writing regularly with my science students, having them practice writing daily. I encouraged them to write detailed sentences, coherent paragraphs, and even descriptive essays. I taught them how to paraphrase and summarize scientific text material, and the results showed that our efforts were fruitful.
