About Lisa

I am a devoted wife and mother of five, and currently a teacher at Lawrence Advance Academy, where I not only teach English 9-12, but also journalism, and a college and careers class focusing on study skills, and serve as the school's college and careers coordinator, publications advisor, and Twitter handler. My passion for teaching has spanned more than 40 years; I have wanted to be a teacher since I was five years old! After a 10-year stint in Journalism, I became a licensed teacher in 2003, and have worked in both rural and urban settings ever since.

As a teacher, I pride myself on tailoring lessons that fit individual student needs. This not only benefits the student academically, but emotionally, as they are able to relate and connect to the materials at hand. It is this type of influence that helps me to bond with my students, and sparks their willingness to succeed. In addition, I am very active in communicating with parents, and in forming a partnership in helping their children to reach their goals. I have experience working in a one-to-one setting, having served as a home-bound teacher/tutor for many years within Noblesville Community Schools, as well as Indianapolis Public Schools. As an advocate for students, I love seeing the lightbulb to off when my students "get it"-- when they have experienced the success of grasping a concept and WANT to move on to the next level. I will bring that same enthusiasm into helping your child, as well!

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and am certified to teach English and Journalism for grades 5-12., and have experience teaching all secondary levels. I am an award-winning journalist, as well as a successful publications advisor. My passion for literature and writing is carried out in my classroom, and, as a teacher, I tailor my lessons and curriculum to fit the needs of the students at hand.

Summer is a perfect time to brush up on shaky skills, as well as prepare to learn some new concepts. Because we are on summer break, I have a fairly flexible schedule this summer, and can usually meet any time between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. with the exception of Tuesdays. Please feel free to contact me for locations!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
