About Heather

I have 25 years teaching experience, and this experience includes many areas. I have taught the following elementary grades: 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 Title I Reading (small groups of specialized instruction) to all grade levels. During the time I worked in Title I, I spent much of the time teaching reading to students one-on-one or in very small groups. I have a major in Elementary Education, a minor in French, and a Master's degree in Middle Grades Education concentrating in science, social studies, and language arts in grades 4-8. With this experience, I feel comfortable teaching many levels.

I love teaching and tutoring, am extremely patient, and am committed to making sure my students learn. I love all subjects including math, science, social studies, reading, writing, grammar, and more. I spend my free time reading and writing. I have a children's novel in the works, and this experience has enhanced my knowledge of reading, writing, and vocabulary. I currently teach sixth grade High Ability classes in science and math. Presently, I am attending Ball State University in pursuit of my High Ability License. I love to learn and enjoy taking classes! It is my goal to share this love of learning with all of my students.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold an elementary license in grades 1-6 for the State of Indiana. I am also licensed to teach language arts and science in grades 1-9. I have a Master's degree in middle grades education, grades 4-8, with a concentration in social studies and science. I have taught for 25 years in many grade levels including 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and Title I Reading. I have taught beginning reading skills to first graders and have given the i-Read state test for third graders with 95% of my students passing the test. I taught my own children to read before they went to formal school. I am an avid reader and a patient tutor.

My son and I had a chance to meet with Heather today. She was nice and listened to my concerns. I think she will be able to help in the areas my son needs. We look forward to our next meeting.
