About Daniel

Before Japan I maintained various kinds of electronic equipment. I studied Japanese at Cornell and then spent 20 years growing in the language and in my understanding of the Japanese people as I pastored two churches. I used the language and my understanding of the people to help them--including preventing 2 or 3 suicides (in Japan). I taught in Japanese. After an earthquake in 1995 destroyed much of Kobe City, I served on the mayor's advisory counsel as they were rebuilding the city. After 20 years in Japan, I did a Master's degree in 'Advanced Japanese Studies' from U. of Sheffield (in the UK). I taught Japanese in a college, then I worked in the Japanese automotive industry. I did written translation and simultaneous interpretation for Japanese companies. (In simultaneous interpretation, no one stops for the interpreter so the interpreter has to listen in one language while speaking in the other.) I like to help people succeed, and teaching is one way I do that. That is what I enjoy about teaching. I also enjoy the challenge of making something understandable to someone.

Learning Japanese was the hardest thing I ever did, so I understand the problems a student has with it. When I was an electronic technician, my boss told me he chose me to train someone with no understanding of electronics to do certain technical things because I have (in his words) 'infinite patience'. I can teach Japanese several different ways--depending on how the student learns. At Cornell I learned Japanese under one of the top pedagogical Japanese linguists in the world, so I learned much about language teaching pedagogy--which I used when I taught English to Japanese junior high and high school students as well as to adults. (The problems Japanese have learning English are related to the problems we have learning their language, so this helps me teach the Japanese language to English speakers.) I can teach at a practical level for those who only want that, and more deeply for students who aim at fluency or need precision.

I love to open up the exotic world of Japanese to people. Let me open it up for you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

I learned how to teach a foreign language from a world-famous pedagogical linguist at Cornell U. and applied that in teaching English to Japanese youth and adults while I lived and worked in Japan 20 years. I have a Master's in Advanced Japanese Studies from the U. of Sheffield in the UK and taught Japanese language at a college. I have done written translation and simultaneous interpretation (listening in one language while speaking in the other) for Japanese companies.
