About Michelle

Hello! My name is Dr. J! I am a professional licensed educator in Indianapolis, Indiana with exceptional teaching experience of 23+ years in both the elementary and middle school levels. I am an effective educator because I facilitate educational learning that is fun, creative, and engaging. It is my ambition for students to achieve positive long-term and life-changing results from the learning process. I am committed to encourage and empower students with the development of real-world critical/analytical thinking skills that will surely help overcome various academic challenges. I have a proven record of student statewide test scores to be higher than school and district averages. My strong teacher passion, experience, and professional outlook have always been the foundation that positively motivates students toward their achievement of personal and educational goals.

What I love about tutoring is that it provides engaging, practical learning in a least restrictive positive environment with minimal distractions. The one-on-one or small group interaction between the educator and student(s) is conducive for providing that "extra" encouragement and practice on skills necessary to encourage student success.

In addition to my educational passion is that all students can learn if they are properly challenged and lovingly guided. The expression of mutual respect, effective teacher planning with academic rigor, and the encouragement of critical thinking through engagement have proven to be great best practices. Incorporating these practices are necessary strategies for discerning individual learning styles and behaviors. This positive attitude promotes higher student academic achievement and increases self-confidence.

I specialize in Reading Comprehension, Language Arts, Vocabulary Building and Spelling. I also am equipped with experience to tutor elementary math, science, social studies, and health. Students are provided with effective hands-on learning strategies to challenge yet be fun and creative. Assignments may be given after tutoring sessions. I will also provide periodic assessments and progress reports for parents/significant adults.

I am licensed in the state of Indiana Grades 1-6, 7/8 Non-Departmental, Elementary Education with a Science, Grades 1-9 Endorsement. My preference would be upper elementary, but if the service is needed, I can accommodate!

I encourage feedback so that I can maximize our time and your expense. I am dedicated to making sure you are more than satisfied with my tutoring assistance.

I try to be flexible with time. Please note that I have at least a 12-hour cancellation policy. I do understand as a mother as well, that emergencies can and will occur. Having said, I offer the same courtesy for you and will offer makeup sessions.

I find it beneficial for parents that their students learn in a safe, non-threatening study environment while working with tutors. I have a business office located near the Broad Ripple/ Glendale area where I can teach private or small group sessions. I will be willing to travel to a Public Library near either of us, coffee house, or other public locations as additional convenient options for your student.

I look forward to hearing from you with great expectations for student success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I believe that teaching is a gift! Having the opportunity to empower and inspire children to develop personally and academically has always been a high regard for me over the last 20+ years. It is a calling that I humbly accept and do not take for granted. In many ways, I find that I am just as inspired and intrigued by those I teach.

I hold a valid professionalized teacher's license in the State of Indiana. The license is Elementary Education Grades 1-6, 7/8 Non-Departmental. I also have a Science Endorsement for Grades 1-9.

Phonics

Phonics is very effective for beginning readers as it provides the basic development for phonemic awareness and word attack skills. Phonics not only assist with reading, but is significant for development of speech and writing patterns through purposeful listening and speaking sounds. The recognition and identification of individual consonant and blended sounds, short and long vowel sounds are critical for students to comprehend that words are developed by speech sounds.

I hold a valid professionalized teacher's license in the State of Indiana. The license is Elementary Education Grades 1-6, 7/8 Non-Departmental. I also have a Science Endorsement for Grades 1-9.

Study Skills

Regarding study skills, I have 10 years experience with Indiana State testing, such as I-READ, I-STEP, Acuity and local school district benchmarks for grades 3-8. These assessments require teaching appropriate test preparation tools such as study skills and test taking strategies. The combination of these two along with daily academic rigor can help decrease test anxiety.
