I am a retired public school teacher of 35 years. I spent 27 years at the first grade and have taught in every grade except Kindergarten and 6th. My strength is in my love of reading and literature activities. I enjoy taking a reading story and using it for the basis all of the other content areas. I feel the students can see how there is more than one level to a subject or story. You can develop spelling words, vocabulary, writing, English, social studies and science from most stories or subjects, which in turns ties the story to many more areas than "just reading the story."
In my classroom along with individual students or suggestions to parents I have used many different approaches to help struggling students along with the entire class. For example when learning spelling words, I look for some way to connect them to something relevant to the students, look for smaller words in the larger word, pronounce the word more like it looks rather than how it actually is said. I have used cheerleading motions to help spell out the spelling words. I have found this to be very effective with the students that need more movement. I ask students to visualize pictures in their minds to help with learning. I am a firm believer that learning can be fun and it is sometimes this approach that makes the connection between a child refusing to work to improve their skills to "wanting" to work toward improving. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught first grade for 27 years and during those years I worked with students on learning how to use manuscript. I worked with students using a chart with the letters so the students could make the letters correctly. We worked on handwriting every day during the school year.
I taught First Grade for 27 years and during those years I worked with various Phonemic programs. I taught a phonics lesson daily. I have a strong phonemic background. I also, realize not all students learn using phonemic sounds. I have used a sight word program for those students that struggle with the basic Phonics program.
