About Sarah

As a former Teach For America corps member and charter school teacher, my vision is to challenge students of all backgrounds to promote achievement. As a current Latin teacher at a selective private school, I have witnessed firsthand the benefits of a classical education. With my dedication to student empowerment and rigorous academic background, including graduating summa cum laude from an Ivy League university and obtaining a master's degree from one of the top ten classics programs, I am ready to make a powerful impact on students outside of the classroom.

While I specialize in tutoring Latin and Greek and am familiar with a variety of textbooks, I am also skilled at preparing students for the SAT and GRE—particularly the reading and writing portions. My experience as a middle and high school math teacher has also prepared me for assisting students in a notoriously difficult subject that will set the foundation for future academic success.

Although I clearly have a deep passion for my subject matter, I have an even greater passion for student achievement that drives me to work relentlessly to obtain results. Over the past five years, I have acquired essential skills and experiences while teaching in secondary schools as well as at the college level, so I know how to challenge students effectively while providing the support they need to succeed.

I look forward to hearing from you and cannot wait to assist you in obtaining the most from your education!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

After completing four years of high school Latin, I graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a double major in Latin and Greek. During my undergraduate career, I earned multiple honors for my work in classics, including Dean's List honors all four years, the John Day Memorial Prize, the Jean Willard Tatlock Memorial Prize, the George Welwood Murray Graduate Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa honors, and a note of distinction on my senior thesis. I then went on pursue my Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, where I completed three years of doctoral coursework in Classical Studies before deciding that I wanted to devote my career to teaching rather than research. I have since taught multiple levels of Latin in secondary schools for three years.

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to my three years of teaching middle and high school, I have also worked directly with elementary students in my mother's K-2 classroom to build reading and math skills. Furthermore, I worked at my local YMCA in the after-school program assisting students K-6 with homework and building good habits and study skills. I also have a variety of experience in tutoring Latin with home-schooled elementary students that has strengthened my ability to work with this age group.

Elementary Math

As a former middle and high school math teacher, I have tutored many students from basic math through Algebra 2. In addition to passing the Praxis to teach secondary math, I also excelled on the quantitative reasoning portions of both the SAT and GRE. Like any subject, math is a skill that must be fostered and developed through hard work and determination, and I make sure my students understand that no one is inherently "a math person."

ESL/ESOL

As a freelance editor for another agency, I work with international and ESL students on improving their writing of personal statements and statements of purpose for graduate school applications, earning top reviews for my prompt replies and meticulous editing. From my study of Latin and Greek along with several modern languages, I have developed a thorough understanding of the grammar and mechanics that make the English language work. Although the writing portion of the SAT did not exist when I was in high school, I excelled on this section of the PSAT and later went on to earn a perfect score on the writing portion of the GRE. My experience as a teacher has also helped me adapt my teaching strategies to a wide variety of learners.

Greek

After completing four years of high school Latin, I graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a double major in Greek and Latin. During my undergraduate career, I earned multiple honors for my work in Greek, including Dean's List honors all four years, the John Day Memorial Prize, the Jean Willard Tatlock Memorial Prize, the George Welwood Murray Graduate Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa honors, and a note of distinction on my senior thesis. I then went on pursue my Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, where I completed three years of doctoral coursework in Classical Studies (Greek and Latin) before deciding that I wanted to devote my career to teaching rather than research. I have since taught multiple levels of Latin in secondary schools for three years.

I have since taught multiple levels of Latin both at the college level and in secondary schools and am currently the Latin teacher for Park Tudor School.

Prealgebra

As a Teach For America corps member in Alabama, I taught middle and high school math, including pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, and algebra II. In addition to passing the Praxis to teach secondary math, I also excelled in the quantitative reasoning portions on both the SAT and GRE. Since prealgebra is the foundation on which all upper math is based, it is important for students to establish a thorough understanding of it. Like any subject, math is a skill that must be fostered and developed through hard work and determination, and I make sure my students understand that no one is inherently "a math person."

Public Speaking

As a high school student, I competed in the original oratory category at forensics competitions of both the Catholic Forensics League and National Forensics League. My cleverly written and well-delivered speeches earned me honors at the district, regional, and state level. Over the past year, I also taught a public speaking course and coached my own forensics team at a charter school in inner-city Boston. Although this was a new team with novice competitors, they held their own against established teams from area private schools.

SAT Math

As a Teach For America corps member in Alabama, I taught middle and high school math, including pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, and algebra II. In addition to passing the Praxis to teach secondary math, I also excelled in the quantitative reasoning portions on both the SAT and GRE. Like any subject, math is a skill that must be fostered and developed through hard work and determination, and I make sure my students understand that no one is inherently "just not a math person."

Study Skills

As a former math and language teacher, I have worked with a variety of students who struggle with executive functioning and study skills. Based on my experience with a number of students who have IEP and 504 plans, I know the struggles that these students face and have assisted many of them with their study skills, organization, and test-taking strategies. When tutoring students, I ask them to review their thought process aloud so I can pinpoint where their needs lie and best assist them with their approach to a new assignment or problem. I also work with them to develop systems that they can later maintain on their own.

Writing

As a scholar of Latin and Greek along with several modern languages, I have developed a thorough understanding of the grammar and mechanics that make the English language work. Although the writing portion of the SAT did not exist when I was in high school, I excelled on this section of the PSAT and later went on to earn a perfect score on the writing portion of the GRE. Incredibly Capable and Patient — Sarah has been- and continues to be- helpful to my daughter. We saw a more hopeful attitude immediately, and we quickly saw results. Sarah is very efficient and capable, and is also able to engage my daughter, who can be very resistant and difficult. I am continually impressed with Sarah, and with my daughter's attitude about her own capabilities in Latin. This year would have been much more d ...
