I do may best to help each person, But everyone approaches and values learning differently.
Many times the tutor that best fits you is one with a complementary outlook on education. The Holland code is one method to measure this outlook. My psychological profile, according to the Holland Code is IAS. The codes are I (Investigate), A (artistic/innovative), and S (social/teach). These letters are in order of importance in explaining me. This drives how I approach learning. Based on lots of tutoring and looking at where I was successful, it is clear that students who match my code do the best with me. It also turns out that my profile is somewhat different from the typical 4.0 student. My teaching is focused on learning an less on getting "the right answer."

My analysis comes from the book "What Color is Your Parachute." You can use the directions in that book to get your Holland Code. Here is what the book says about it.

[I] investigative. These are "people who are very curious and like to investigate or analyze things, or people, or data." This is an important attitude to have when approaching the science fields of mathematics and statistics. Doing well in these courses requires the student to tolerate a certain amount of confusion and frustration. This is all normal when lea

I successfully completed exams 100 and 110 a number of years ago and these have been converted to credit for COURSE1 which gives me a conversion credit for exam P. Exam P is the very first exam and covers probability. So, based on the fact I have passed exams 100 and 110, and those convert to Exam P, I should be able to help people with exam P. Exam P is only the first exam in the list of requirements given by the Society of Actuaries for certification.

Mathematica is a symbolic and numerical system that uses functional programming concepts. I have a masters in Statistics, so I have used Mathematica for a variety of mathematical uses in my own education. I have also used Mathematica to teach Calculus I and II at a University. I used Mathematica to create illustrations I then projected them for the class to see. This helped me explain mathematical concepts. I have also read books on the programming style using in Mathematica applications.

Knowledgable and patient

Great with pre cal for my daughter made it easy to understand for her. Highly recommend. She understood after Harlan left from one visit he is very patient and freindly breaks down the subject so u can get a root understanding on how to solve the equation.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Harlan knows everything there is to know about statistics. He is patient and will not stop until you thoroughly understand the material. He is available to tutor on a short notice as well which makes him my preferred tutor.

Kwame, 7 lessons with Harlan

He is very knowledgable and is very good at tutoring.

He has shown us what we need to be learning in the books that we bought. On the days when he is not tutoring, we work on lessons in the books. When he comes to tutor, we show him our work, and he goes over them with us, and helps us on the ones we don't understand or answered wrong. He is very patient, and explains how to solve the problems with us, and writes problems out with us, so we can better understand them.

SAS refresher

Expert and great tutor with very efficient and timely response. Good feedback and detailed when finding errors in the codes too. Would recommend for anyone having a stressful time using SAS

R, 3 lessons with Harlan

Amazing Tutor with a love for teaching and Learning!

I was struggling with the exceedingly high expectations of my manager for my summer internship, especially because I had no prior coding experience. My internship was related to a drug-development process which is very fast paced and requires knowledge of some very niche R packages such as Regularized and Sparse Generalized Canonical Correlation Analysis. Harlan spent countless hours not only teaching me these advanced tools but was also able to understand the biological side of the data analysis. He also helped me create a new algorithm that was very specific to my data. I will hands down recommend Harlan for anything related to R, machine learning, and statistics!

Lavanya, 14 lessons with Harlan

Fabulous with R and Patient.

He's very knowledgeable with R and efficient. He can explain things to help you understand and really knows R inside and out. He is very patient and was so helpful in helping me learn how to create different visuals using the data set.
