I do may best to help each person, But everyone approaches and values learning differently.
Many times the tutor that best fits you is one with a complementary outlook on education. The Holland code is one method to measure this outlook. My psychological profile, according to the Holland Code is IAS. The codes are I (Investigate), A (artistic/innovative), and S (social/teach). These letters are in order of importance in explaining me. This drives how I approach learning. Based on lots of tutoring and looking at where I was successful, it is clear that students who match my code do the best with me. It also turns out that my profile is somewhat different from the typical 4.0 student. My teaching is focused on learning an less on getting "the right answer."

My analysis comes from the book "What Color is Your Parachute." You can use the directions in that book to get your Holland Code. Here is what the book says about it.

[I] investigative. These are "people who are very curious and like to investigate or analyze things, or people, or data." This is an important attitude to have when approaching the science fields of mathematics and statistics. Doing well in these courses requires the student to tolerate a certain amount of confusion and frustration. This is all normal when learning at a higher conceptual level. It is part of the excitement and challenge of learning.

[A] "The artistic People-Environment: Filled with people who prefer activities involving "ambiguous, free, unsystematized activities and competencies to create art forms or products." At a certain level, math and statistics and clearly language is not systematized. This fact sometimes frustrates students looking for a set of steps to follow.

[S] "The Social People-Environment: filled with people who prefer activities involving "the manipulation of others to inform, train, develop, cure, or enlighten." I certainly like to teach and enlighten others. Learning math and statistics can help people gain a broader perspective on life. Learning English is a key to experiencing culture in the US.

I am really a professional learner. I know how to learn and enjoy it. I then teach what I learn. In the work place I have functioned as a statistician, data scientist, data analyst and statistical programmer. I can teach anything related to that. I have programmed in SAS, R, python, Mathematica, SQL, PIG, and other things. I like to teach Health Outcomes related topics like Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Methods.

I would like to do more calculus and statistics AP tutoring as well as ACT and SAT test prep. I want to teach people the ASA exam P.

I have about four years classroom ESL teaching experience. There are many people who speak English because I taught them. I can diagnose your needs through a simple conversation.

My goal is to give you an understanding of the material so you are comfortable with it and can then master the material. You will tell me what you know and let me see how you think about the material. If there is something that needs to be corrected or if you need additional understanding then I'll cover that. You will be the one driving the session, not me. I don't have any "easy" methods or short-cuts. Not because I am against that, but it is not my gift. I know others who can do that, so if that is what you want there are others who can provide it.

I can deal with people who are very frustrated, but still motivated.

When you learn, learn in 20 minute segments. Then let your brain rest. Whatever you learn today, review tomorrow and again a couple of days later. Your brain learns through repetition. Learn something then force your brain to recall it. That is why writing in the margins is better than a highlighter. When you write, you have to remember. Force yourself to work homework problems without looking at the solutions.
I enjoy learning, I would love to work with you.

I successfully completed exams 100 and 110 a number of years ago and these have been converted to credit for COURSE1 which gives me a conversion credit for exam P. Exam P is the very first exam and covers probability. So, based on the fact I have passed exams 100 and 110, and those convert to Exam P, I should be able to help people with exam P. Exam P is only the first exam in the list of requirements given by the Society of Actuaries for certification.

SAS refresher

Expert and great tutor with very efficient and timely response. Good feedback and detailed when finding errors in the codes too. Would recommend for anyone having a stressful time using SAS

R, 3 lessons with Harlan

Amazing Tutor with a love for teaching and Learning!

I was struggling with the exceedingly high expectations of my manager for my summer internship, especially because I had no prior coding experience. My internship was related to a drug-development process which is very fast paced and requires knowledge of some very niche R packages such as Regularized and Sparse Generalized Canonical Correlation Analysis. Harlan spent countless hours not only teaching me these advanced tools but was also able to understand the biological side of the data analysis. He also helped me create a new algorithm that was very specific to my data. I will hands down recommend Harlan for anything related to R, machine learning, and statistics!

Fabulous with R and Patient.

He's very knowledgeable with R and efficient. He can explain things to help you understand and really knows R inside and out. He is very patient and was so helpful in helping me learn how to create different visuals using the data set.

Amazing Tutor

I am very impressed with Harlan’s quality of instruction and his ability to explain concepts. He is patient and I found it enjoyable to discuss concepts and scenarios with him. Harlan is very knowledgeable in R and statistics, and coding in general. I am so grateful I found Harlan!!!

Jennifer, 2 lessons with Harlan

Great Tutor!

He helped with all my questions and showed step by step solutions which was a great help. I enjoyed working with Harlan and was he was kind and patient when I didn't understand concepts!

Lourdes, 7 lessons with Harlan

Brilliant and generous!

I really benefited from my lesson with Harlan last night, and got a score that I never would’ve gotten on my own... he went above and beyond what he had to do, and because of his profound expertise he did not disappoint like other tutors who are not as experienced tend to do!

Amy Michele, 1 lesson with Harlan

Creative, knowledgeable, patient tutor

We went into detail on discrete and linear optimization, working through Excel Solver and trying out different approaches to setting up constraints. Thanks so much - I'll work with Harlan again!

Manuela, 1 lesson with Harlan

ONLY Tutor I will EVER use!

Harlan is extremely talented, not only is he great in R and SAS, but he is knowledgeable in many subjects! I learned more from him than my actual professor. I won’t be looking for any new tutors. 🙌🏽

Sunia, 6 lessons with Harlan

Great tutor

Harlan helped me get a better understanding around some basic stats and was even helpful with my follow up questions. Very easy to talk to and understands what you need to get out of a session.
