About Meg

I have taught and tutored organic chemistry for several years and have worked as a practicing chemist in the field of organic chemistry for 20 years. In addition I am a licensed chemistry teacher in the state of Indiana, having completed my student teaching in a college prep chemistry classroom. This unique combination means that I KNOW the subject area, can RELATE concepts to "real world" applications, and UNDERSTAND how to help students improve their mastery over the subject. In addition, I was a mathematics minor in college and this has proven helpful in teaching chemistry.

Chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students due to the conceptual nature of the material. But once it has been mastered, it can be fun. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand how chemistry relates to their lives since introductory courses can come across as boring. I like to use analogies to help explain difficult concepts, and I try to lead students to discover the answer on their own rather than simply providing them with answers to the problems they are working on. Sometimes this will require backing up to review a concept covered earlier in class in order to master current material.

My goal is for students to understand the "why" aspect of the subject instead of simply memorizing facts. If students understand how it works, they can apply that knowledge to similar problems and solve them, which leads to greater understanding of the subject and fewer mistakes on quizzes and exams.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is the study of linear equations. Students are expected to solve inequalities, use algebraic notation and graphic notation.

Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of atoms and elements and how they combine to form molecules and how they react.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry involves the study of the element carbon and the many compounds it forms and the reactions those compounds are involved in. I have been a practicing organic chemist for 20 years and have taught both Organic Chemistry classes and laboratory work so can explain "how" reactions occur and why they are useful in real life situations.

Great tutor! — We hired Meg to tutor our daughter who is taking organic chemistry as a pre-pharmacy requirement. Our daughter is an incredibly strong student overall, but was feeling frustrated and began losing her confidence as the course work was progressing. We have hired tutors in the past for our other daughter and believe that a fresh one on one approach is often beneficial in their academic success. Me ...
