Corporate Training

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

My goal as an ESL/TESOL tutor is to help students improve their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, to prepare for standardized tests, or to learn the academic or professional English that is unique to their field. I have tutored ESL students preparing for the TOEFL, the IELTS, the ACT, the SAT, and the GRE. Several years ago, I tutored English language learners in the English Bible once a week for almost 5 years as a volunteer for International Students, Inc. in Ann Arbor. I once spent a summer in Germany and had the experience of being a non-native speaker immersed in another culture and language; so I am sensitive to some of the cultural conflicts that non-native speakers might face. I am certified to help students and professionals improve their English.
Grammar,

Grammar

I am a native English speaker. I love the English language and have always excelled in English in school and college. Having studied other languages as well (specifically Latin, German, and Spanish) makes it easier for me to teach English grammar.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have proofread and edited newsletter articles for an agency newsletter for several years. Before that, I wrote, proof read, and edited my dissertation. One clue to proof reading is reading backwards. Your eye catches spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors more easily reading backwards than reading forwards.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

I have used Family Math and Family Science materials produced by the EQUALS project at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkely, CA to help elementary school-aged and middle school-aged children improve their understanding and participation in mathematics and science.

Reading,

Reading

I first want to make sure my students are proficient in the building blocks of reading. Learning to read starts with such building blocks as letter recognition, pronunciation of individual letters and combinations of letters, sounding out words by syllables, memorization of sight words (the most frequently used words in the English language), and understanding English grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, and punctuation. Next, I want to make sure my students are good at reading comprehension. One of the best ways to get good at reading comprehension is to read frequently, starting with short, high interest texts that are at your reading level and to gradually progress to more challenging texts. Another way to improve one's reading comprehension is to listen to short books on CD or DVD, with the book in front of you, so that you can follow along with the narrator. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking English are integrally linked, so I would also want to help my students strengthen their writing, listening, and speaking skills.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have successfully studied through and completed high school, a master's program in social work, and a Ph. D. program in education. My study skills include self-monitoring, using multiple approaches to learning, and going beyond the homework that a teacher requires of his or her students.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I took 4 years of Latin when I was in high school and found that helped me considerably in mastering vocabulary, since many English words have a Latin root. Another way to bolster one's vocabulary is to read extensively in the subject area one wants to master. Each content area has its own unique set of words. For instance, the word "table" in mathematics conjures up a different picture than the word "table" in geography or "table" in food science. Playing scrabble or other word games is another way to expand one's vocabulary, not to mention studying the dictionary, although that can be a little boring.

Bible Studies

I have read and studied the Bible from front to back using a variety of Bible study methods ever since I was 16, which was a long time ago. I have taught non-believers from other countries as well as believers from the US. I have taught Sunday school for almost 45 years, working mostly with 1st-5th graders. I love the Bible and I love helping people learn more about it because that deepens my knowledge of the bible as well.

Knowledgeable and kind

Elizabeth is the tutor that I am looking for. I want tutor who corrects my pronunciation, grammar, and expressions that usually I don't realize that is wrong by myself. She also has good writing skills, so she suggests much natural and fluent English writings or sentences, and I really like it.

Great tutor.

I have failed my GED test so many times that I lost hope in ever getting my GED due to the fact that I'm really bad in math and not finding the right prep classes for me. Until I started doing my tutoring with Elizabeth. I have been doing my lessons for a couple of weeks now and it has been an amazing experience. Elizabeth is very professional, patient and polite. She takes her time in making sure I fully understand each problem and helps me with my vocabulary. When I first spoke to Elizabeth I told her my goal was to pass my test and finally get my GED. I truly believe that I will complete that goal soon thanks to Elizabeth.

Patient and knowledgeable tutor

We worked on argumentative essay writing. I was able to organize my thoughts clearly with the help of Dr. M. Without her help it wouldn't have been that easy.
