About Darryl

If I were to describe my career choices in one phrase it would be that I have always had one foot in the ENGINEERING world and one foot in the EDUCATION world with MATH and PROBLEM SOLVING being the common thread. When I graduated high school in 1993 I went to Purdue to pursue an engineering degree. I graduated in 1997 with a BS in Construction Engineering and Management and passed my EIT (Engineer In Training) exam. Ahead of me was a stable, well-paying career, but God had other plans. After a couple years in this field, I felt the call to teach.

I had lots of good instructors and wanted to make a difference in students' lives. One of my favorites was a Trigonometry teacher in high school who broke things down and put tricky concepts into our language (along with a great sense of humor - a must for any teacher these days!). He was also a coach which I think helped his teaching and vice versa. I decided to try to follow in his and many other good teachers' footsteps. After substitute teaching in the spring of 2001, I went to Ball State University In the fall to pursue a Master's degree in Secondary (grades 5-12) Math Education and my teaching license. I finished my degree and student teaching experience and received my teaching license in December 2003.

I taught 8th and 9th grade Prealgebra/Algebra classes and coached baseball in the public school system until 2006 when I decided to take a break and go back to engineering. Since then, I've alternated between teaching math (Ivy Tech, 3 years) and practicing engineering (I received my Professional Engineer license in 2014). My wife and I homeschool our 3 kids and enjoy seeing their faces light up when they understand concepts that have been a challenge for them.

I'm currently in sales and marketing for an environmental consulting/testing firm but still enjoy tutoring students in my spare time. I believe having good math skills is the GATEWAY to opportunities in almost any WELL-PAYING CAREER; from technology to health care. I know it can be broken down in a way that everyone can understand, no matter what age. I have applied math concepts in my work as an engineer so I can relate them to real-world situations. I've also taught and tutored math for over 7 years to STUDENTS OF ALL AGES ( from senior high to seniors) and love to see when my students relax after realizing "they CAN get this stuff".

I believe for a majority of students it takes more than just watching the math done on the screen/board and trying to imitate it through homework to understand the concepts. It's also being able to EXPLAIN what you're doing and CONNECTING it with previous concepts. To nurture these skills, I try to draw out students' REASONING and THINKING with probing questions to make sure there's a SOLID UNDERSTANDING before moving onto the next skill. I think the CONFIDENCE each student will gain from interacting and mastering concepts in our sessions will be the greatest reward along with the POSITIVE MOMENTUM that will carry on to other classes and endeavors. I look forward to seeing that light come on again and helping them come to the point where they don't need me anymore and have become self-sufficient learners! Let's make it happen and get started!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

The ACT has become the more common college entrance exam. I am certified to teach ACT Math which is more focused on book smarts based on the high school curriculum. I graduated with an engineering degree from Purdue and a Master's degree in math education from Ball State University and I have taught the high school math curriculum for 2 years. I can also teach students how to prepare for tests in a time-efficient manner

Algebra 1

I taught and tutored Algebra 1 at Ivy Tech Community College for over 3 years and I taught this subject for 2 years as a high school math teacher. I enjoy seeing students get the hang of solving equations and graphing.

Algebra 2

I have taught a combination of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 in both high school and college settings for 4 years. I can help students break down and master the steps for each problem they face in Algebra 2.

Geometry

As a practicing engineer and a former high school teacher, I love geometry and own several resources that can help students learn the concepts. I have passed Wyzant's assessment to qualify as a geometry tutor.

Nursing

I taught college algebra at Ivy Tech Community College which trains nurses that have to eventually take the TEAS test. I also have an engineering degree from Purdue which involved taking college chemistry and physics.

Prealgebra

I have taught/tutored Prealgebra skills for over 7 years and have some neat resources to help a student master these skills.

SAT Math

The SAT Math portion focuses more on reasoning and problem-solving skills rather than book smarts. Since I've been a teacher and a practicing engineer I've had experience in the classroom and in the business world using these skills to solve real-world problems.

Trigonometry

I tutored several students in Trigonometry while I was a math instructor at Ivy Tech. The right teacher and support can make all the difference - I had any excellent one in high school Trigonometry and hope I can be a helpful support to students struggling in this area.

First session, good stuff!

Darryl helped me by having me teach him the way to solve problems. By the end of our first session, my confidence level was up. I worked on math, completing the remainder of my homework the next day in a much shorter time span than I would have if I had not a clue what I was doing. I have arranged for further sessions with Darryl!!
