About John

I have been a teacher in grades 5 and 6 at a private school. I was named teacher of the year at that school. I moved on to work at middle school level as both an aide an a Special needs teacher for the past 7 years. I am back at elementary level this year working primarily with at risk students in grades 2, 3, and 5. I love to help kids reach their potential and beyond. My current Indiana teaching license in General Elementary studies and Math through Grade 9 runs through May 2019.

I love sports, and have coached several school and local YMCA, Salvation Army and P.A.L. league teams in basketball, and baseball. Also have worked as football announcer, basketball scorebook and scoreboard operator, and track meet official. I am married, have two adult children and a 2 year old grandson.

Math is my favorite subject, and I frequently practice the skills that I teach looking for multiple ways to explain/teach concepts to kids who might not understand them in the prescribed manner they are taught. I have not had as much work in the statistics and probability areas recently, however these are areas that I could quickly get back up to speed in if necessary to assist a student.

I would love to be able to help you improve your educational performance. Please contact me and let me know how I can help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

Took and passed Indiana Educator licensing CORE exam for Social Studies grades 5-9 on October 15, 2015. Subject has been added to my Indiana Educators license as of October 26, 2015.

Study Skills

I work daily with students with special needs-mainly learning disabilities in the area of math or language. Much of my job at school has to do with helping those students break down assignments, notes, reading selections into more manageable pieces so that they may summarize, analyze, compare and contrast or commit to memory information that they will need to retain and work with to be successful in the classroom. I have worked with many different graphic organizers for the above mentioned purposes and can teach students how to use them and adapt them so that they make more sense to them with the material they need to learn.
