Wheaton College, IL (Physics)
Wheaton College, IL (Master's)
My name is Joyce, and I have over 7 years of experience tutoring high school and college math and physics. I have tutored physics (including regular, honors and AP), prealgebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II, precalculus, trigonometry, calculus, GRE math, ACT math, SAT math, enrichment math, and writing. I have taught the equivalent of AP Physics 1 and 2 (introductory algebra-based physics for pre-med and health science majors) as an adjunct at Huntington University. I have also TA'ed the college equivalent of AP Physics C (calculus-based introductory physics for physics and engineering majors). I have a BS in Physics from Wheaton College and a Master's in Systematic Theology from Wheaton.
I believe that academic excellence comes from deep engagement with the subject being learned rather than focusing on grades or awards. I want students to see the intrinsic worth of the subject being learned, its relevance to their life, and their own progress in the subject. When this happens, the student will be motivated to keep improving, with external indicators such as grades being just the confirmation of the "getting it" experience that the student already has. Thus, in addition to teaching content and skills, I focus on communicating enthusiasm for the subject being taught and helping students develop a lifelong love for learning. I am a patient, understanding tutor, who enjoys breaking down concepts so that they are easy to understand. I work hard to identify each student's strengths and weaknesses and will work with your student to overcome his or her problem areas. I have written mini-lectures and problem sets for students before as supplements to their official homework when I thought that it would benefit the student. I really enjoy working one on one with students and seek to develop a supportive, empowering relationship with each individual I tutor.
In addition to supporting students' academic endeavors, I also enjoy tutoring math enrichment / recreational math. This can be math just for fun or preparation for math competitions such as MATHCOUNTS or AMC. I enjoy exposing students to math topics and problems that they would not ordinarily see in secondary school.
I am available Monday through Friday 10 am-6 pm.* My preferred meeting place is Huntington Public Library, but I have a car and am willing to travel to students' homes if they live within my travel radius. Depending on how full my schedule is, I am also open to meeting Southwest Allen County students at Allen County Public Library Aboite or their homes. My resume and references are available on request.

We selected Joyce based on the on line reviews. She had great reviews. We found the reviews to be well deserved. Joyce is not just smart, but she is interested in the student improving and takes a caring attitude to all she does with the student. I would highly recommend her to a high achieving student who needs a tutor who is able to teach high level math
Joyce was an excellent tutor! I have been struggling with college algebra, however Joyce explained the concepts in way that I could understand. She is both friendly and skilled at what she does and I enjoyed working with her!
Joyce is an amazing tutor. We could not have hoped for better. She helped with content mastery and with confidence and has a fantastic personality.
Joyce is an excellent tutor and very patient to work with . She has a good knowledge of the subjects and explains it very well . My Daughter really enjoyed learning from her . I will definitely be using her next school year .
Joyce was very patient and has a knack for explaining things. She gave them some great pointers and ways to think through the "why" to the problems.
She show me how to answer different questions. I also learn different areas I need to work on with math.
My daughter dislikes tutors. However, she really liked Joyce and is going to work with her. So happy we found Joyce.
My Granddaughter wrote on her Facebook page, Great first lesson I may even like Math this year. WOW! Wish we would have found Joyce sooner. Thanks, Joyce.
We found Joyce while looking for a Physics tutor; it turned out that she is also a great ACT tutor. We wish that we had found her sooner.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a physics major who has tutored most high school math subjects, my math skills are quite sharp, including for the ACT math exam.
As a physics major, I have a strong grasp of mathematical concepts. I will break concepts down so that they are easy to understand!
I have helped several students with algebra II, including one student who was failing. I enjoy breaking down difficult concepts in a way that students can understand!
Calculus is about two main ideas--finding rates of change and areas under curves. It is a powerful subject that has numerous applications in science and technology. I have tutored calculus many times, and I know how to explain key concepts in a way students can understand.
Difficult geometry problems often require insight and creativity. I enjoy helping students develop their mathematical problem-solving skills.
Onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration...literature is the wonderful study of how writers use literary techniques to do everything from entertaining us to conveying great ideas about the human condition. Improve your ability to analyze great literature, write cogently, and think deeply!
At Huntington University, I taught introductory physics for health science majors, the equivalent of AP Physics 1 and 2. While I was at Huntington, I developed an extensive set of notes, lectures, and active learning activities. I also wrote new labs that helped the students experience the concepts learned in class. I actively sought out online interactive activities and video demonstrations to supplement my teaching. I have a BS in Physics from Wheaton College and have tutored several students in the subject. I am passionate about physics and love helping others understand this beautiful science!
Functions, graphs, analytic geometry, matrices, combinatorics, and probability--all of the above are often topics in Precalculus classes. As a tutor, I have developed ways to teach and explain all of the above topics, so that students can really understand them.
