Wheaton College, IL (Master's)
My name is Joyce, and I am an adjunct professor in physics at Huntington University. I have a BS in physics from Wheaton College, a Master's in Systematic Theology from Wheaton, and more than four years of experience in tutoring and teaching high school and early college physics, math, and writing. I am currently teaching introductory physics at Huntington University, which is the equivalent of AP Physics B. I have also TA'ed the college equivalent of AP Physics C.
In high school, I was a straight-A student, who took all honors and many AP classes. I was also on the math team and helped my high school win the state championships. I was a National Merit Finalist and was accepted into several top 20 universities. More importantly, I enjoyed learning and worked hard to excel.
I believe that the heart of academic excellence is not about getting good grades or winning awards. In addition to teaching content and skills, I focus on communicating enthusiasm for the subject being taught and helping students develop a lifelong love for learning. I am a patient, understanding tutor, who enjoys breaking down concepts so that they are easy to understand. I work hard to identify each student's strengths and weaknesses and will work with your student to overcome his or her problem areas. I have written mini-lectures and problem sets for students before as supplements to their official homework when I thought that it would benefit the student.
I am available Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 5 pm. My preferred meeting place is Huntington Public Library, but I have a car and am willing to travel to students' homes if they live within 20 minutes of Huntington. My resume and references are available on request, as well as a list of tutoring policies. My name is Joyce, and I am an adjunct professor in physics at Huntington University. We found Joyce while looking for a Physics tutor; it turned out that she is also a great ACT tutor. We wish that we had found her sooner.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a physics major, I have a strong grasp of mathematical concepts. I will break concepts down so that they are easy to understand!
Last spring, I helped a student raise her grade by one letter grade!
I am a 3rd year master's student in Systematic Theology at Wheaton Graduate School. I have taken numerous Bible and theology classes in college and grad school.
Difficult geometry problems often require insight and creativity. I enjoy helping students develop their mathematical problem-solving skills. In fact, last spring, I helped a student raise her grade by one letter!
