About Desiree

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. As a Cum Laude graduate from The University of Tampa, I reached my childhood dream of becoming an educator. As a former elementary school teacher and former assistant principal (main focus: preK to 4th grade), I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students realize their own potential and see their grades and test scores improve.

I specialize in tutoring reading/ language arts. I enjoy reading data and locating individual student strengths and area(s) of concern. I utilize my own reading assessments to pinpoint phonics and reading strengths/deficiencies. In addition, I use my hands on centers, flashcards, and educational games to assist in the development and fluency of reading. I also reach out to your child's teacher (if allowed by the parent) to obtain additional in depth knowledge of the curriculum being used in an effort to stay aligned with teaching techniques of that subject matter. My goal is to keep each student challenged in each tutoring session in an effort to see continuous improvement.

In addition, if your child’s school administers the NWEA or DIBELs assessment(s), I have background knowledge and research based interventions to assist them in meeting grade level expectations.

I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I also provide periodic assessments and keep parents/guardians informed of their child’s growth from my tutoring sessions.

Tutoring sessions can be held at your home or a local library within 10 miles of my zip code. I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I do offer makeup classes.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your elementary school child achieve success in his/her academics!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my teaching certification (K-8) in Illinois and soon to be in Indiana. I have over six years of experience in teaching and administration combined. I have knowledge in and have trained teachers in reading and analyzing state mandated tests such as NWEA, DIBELs, and ISAT, ISTEP. In addition, I have my own assessments that I use to locate a students area of concern in reading and phonics and utilize my research based interventions to assist students in reaching/exceeding their grade level expectations.

Handwriting

I was trained using Handwriting Without Tears. My main focus was on print (beginning in Kinder-2nd grade) and cursive writing (beginning in 3rd grade). I taught specific concepts such as grip, letter and number recognition, capital, lowercase, and number formations, as well as how to use the top, middle, and bottom line using primary paper. I taught the same multisensory techniques used in print writing and transitioned it over to cursive.

Phonics

I have my teaching certification (K-8) in Illinois and soon to be in Indiana. I have over six years of experience in teaching and administration combined. I have knowledge in and have trained teachers in reading and analyzing state mandated tests such as NWEA, DIBELs, and ISAT, ISTEP+. In addition, I was trained in assessing students using PASI/Phonological Awareness Screeners for Intervention as well as PSI/Phonics Screener for Intervention. In conjunction with these Screeners, I was trained to utilize the Florida Center for Reading Research workstations/centers that align with PASI & PSI to assist students with deficiencies in phonics. I was also trained in Michael Heggerty's Phonemic Awareness: The Skills That They Need To Succeed!
