About Carlos

Dear Sir / Madam,

I have 15 years of professional experience as an educator. I hold a bachelor's degree in Education with emphasis in Mathematics and Physics education. I have had the opportunity to serve as a teacher at different schools as well as different grade levels.

Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to teach in different school settings in two countries: USA and Venezuela (South America), which has allowed me to gather experience in different approaches to teaching.

I hold teaching licenses in the area of mathematics for two states in the United States: Indiana and Virginia.

I have teaching experience in middle school as well as high school mathematics. Among the districts and/or schools I have worked for are: Spratley Middle School (Hampton, Virginia), Maury High School (Norfolk, Virginia), Christel House Academy (Indianapolis, Indiana).

Particular subjects I have taught are: High School Geometry, Algebra II, High School Integrated Math I and II. Integrated Math is a combination of High School Algebra, High School Geometry and Statistics blended in one course. Some high schools use the integrated math approach as opposed to the traditional high school math pathway or sequence of Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, etc.

My tutoring approach consists of gathering as much information as possible in regards to content to be covered and expectations for the class my student is taking. Once this information is gathered and analyzed, I proceed to plan according to the time frame available to meet the goals of the class.

When tutoring I use constant assessments to check for understanding. If tutoring one-on-one then usually clear and effective communication between me and my student allows me to check for progress and understanding.

I also believe and use a gradual release approach (I do, We do, You do). "I do" refers to me demonstrating a particular concept or skill. "We do" is more interactive in which my student and I interact and share opinions on how to solve a math problem. Finally "You do" refers to my student working independently and building confidence by solving problems on his/her own. After all this process or cycle, my student and I analyze the independent work and we go over right and wrong answers or procedures. This process allow my student and I to determine whether we can and should move on, or go back and review content.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

With 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience plus all math courses taken at the college level, most of which were beyond the scope of the mathematics covered on the ACT math, allow me to confidently say that I am qualified and prepared to provide students with the support they need to prepare for the math section on the ACT test.

Also, I have experience teaching/tutoring students with learning disabilities, which has allowed me to develop teaching strategies in order to meet their needs.
Through these years of teaching/tutoring experience, I have also developed knowledge of the structure of the test, mathematics content, as well as the required logical reasoning and thinking skills that students need to develop in order to set the correct strategies and problem-solve in a timely manner.

Algebra 1

For the past 3 and a half years I have been dedicated to teaching this subject and I have gathered experience and teaching/tutoring strategies in how to help students overcome the obstacles they face when trying to master Algebra I concepts.

My tutoring approach consists of evaluating content to be learned, evaluating timeframe available before final test and/or end of the class, as well as constant assessments to check for understanding.

I use a gradual release approach when tutoring in which I demonstrate first when necessary, then my student and I interact to set up and carry out strategies to solve problems. Finally I encourage my student to do some independent work to build confidence. This cycle does not end until my student and I go over the results of independent work and then determine whether material has been mastered or not.

Algebra 2

The key to being a successful Algebra 2 tutor relies on a profound understanding and ability to teach and/or tutor Algebra 1, as well as the mathematics levels above Algebra 2 (Trigonometry, pre-calculus, etc.). My high school mathematics teaching experience (Algebra 2 included) as well as my degree in Mathematics and Physics Education allows me to assist students by explaining the subject matter from different angles so the student can better understand it and be able to apply it.
I also know and am able to teach mathematics above the Algebra 2 level, which means that I am fully aware of the kind of math that I will be preparing the Algebra 2 student for. This knowledge and skill allows me to prioritize and make emphasis in areas that I know will be needed in a trigonometry, statistical analysis and/or a pre-calculus class.
I am also certified by the Indiana State Department of Education to teach these high school level mathematics classes/courses.

Elementary Math

Having taught mathematics at the high school and middle school for 15 years, I have developed a deep understanding of the knowledge and skills students must develop at the elementary level in order to build strong computational skills, logical reasoning and strategy setting for problem solving.

As part of my experience as an educator, I have also been involved in the creation of manipulatives and mathematics teaching materials for elementary teachers. Testing these materials in classrooms with teachers and students was also part of this work assignment.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite subjects to teach/tutor. I enjoy helping students develop abstract thinking and logical reasoning through geometry problems. I also provide students with tools and/or strategies for them to use to help with visualization, specially when handling three dimensional figures.
I also offer the use of concrete manipulatives to help with visualization.

I have demonstrated full understanding of geometry through successful completion of college classes as well as success in required examinations for acquiring my Indiana teaching license. These are the Praxis I and II (specialty area).

I have two and a half years of classroom experience in high schools which has allowed me to gather information on what students struggle the most, and how to help them overcome these obstacles.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is one subject covered in my current valid Indiana teaching license. I have demonstrated knowledge and complete understanding of the principles of algebra through coursework for my bachelor's degree as well as testing required from the state of Indiana to obtain my teaching license. These tests are Praxis I and II (specialty area).

I have 15 years of professional experience in mathematics education. More specifically, I have taught Prealgebra and Algebra at Spratley Middle School (2 years) in Virginia USA, and at Christel House Academy (2.5 years) in Indiana.

Back in 2002, I worked as an assistant to mathematics education university professors in creating teaching materials for arithmetic, prealgebra and algebra. Classroom teachers (recipients) were provided materials as well as training on how to use them. My job consisted on creating materials, assist professors in preparing and conducting workshops and preparing logistics prior to workshops.
This was done overseas at the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello located in Caracas, Venezuela.

Precalculus

A solid foundation of algebra, geometry and trigonometry is required in order to master precalculus. During my high school years as a student, I had the opportunity the build this foundation mentioned above as I also was exposed precalculus math content. Later on, while in college, this foundation served me well in order to be able to understand and master higher level or college level mathematics, that is (mathematical analysis, analytical geometry, calculus, statistics), as well as physical science courses in which one must apply all these concepts of math studied in the subjects mentioned above.
After obtaining a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physical science education I have been fortunate enough to be able to help many students with these mathematics subjects. My teaching and/or tutoring experience has reached 17 years in which I have encountered many challenges and successes as well as learning experiences as to how students learn best and how to be aware and mindful of individual learning styles.

SAT Math

Preparing for the Math SAT test requires specific knowledge not only of the mathematics content involved but also on the type of questions that will be asked.

I am very familiar with the structure of the math sections of the test as well as the type of questions in it. This allows me to set up the right strategies to attack questions and/or math problems from a time-efficiency stand point.

I am fully knowledgeable and confident that I can successfully tutor all the mathematics areas of the SAT test (Pre-algebra, Algebra I, Special math problems, Geometry, and Algebra 2).

I have classroom experience teaching these subjects in traditional high school and middle school settings as well as public charter schools. I am also licensed in the state of Indiana to teach all the subjects mentioned above.

Spanish

As a native Spanish speaker, my educational background consists of elementary, middle, high school and university (bachelor's degree) fully in Spanish. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Education for Universidad Catolica Andres Bello, located in the city of Caracas, Venezuela.

On the other hand, I have teaching experience in both countries Venezuela and the USA. I have a total of 15 years of teaching experience. Nine years teaching in Venezuela fully in Spanish and 6 years of teaching in the USA.

As a native Spanish speaker and someone who learned and is able to fluently speak, read and write in English as a second language, I am aware and have experienced myself the difficulties of learning a second language.

I now, respectfully, offer all my experience and knowledge to my prospective Spanish students.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is one of my favorite math content to teach and/or tutor. During my first exposure to trigonometry, as a high school student, I realized quickly that not only I was able to learn and apply it relatively quickly but also enjoyed helping others to learn too. Later on during my college years, I went more in depth into this subject and its applications as it relates to mathematical analysis, analytical geometry and calculus (college level mathematics). I hold a bachelor's degree in teaching mathematics and physical science from the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello, located in Caracas, Venezuela (South America) and have 17 years of teaching and tutoring experience in this field. I have taught in Venezuelan schools as well as schools in the U.S. , that is public schools as well as public charter schools.
