I have been tutoring elementary children for the past 15 years on a private level and enjoy the one on one with each student. I feel that by being one on one with a student that I can develop an alliance for each individual child and help them to focus on studies but still be on their side. Communicating effectively with each student is essential in being able to assess the student and providing the help they need. I required appropriate behavior from the student which helps to bring in the focus. I believe that we as tutors must be proactive to reach the child and understand their needs to achieve an education beyond just the tutoring.
My past experience with tutoring children has been very rewarding. Many were inner Indianapolis city children who's family culture was not representative of the English speaking children where these children could go home and their parents could speak English to them and help them with their homework. My Hispanic children were able to go from failing grades to moving up a grade. There are many reasons why children have trouble learning and a communication barrier can be overcome with hard work, understanding, and dedication. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a substitute teacher in Allen County Indiana. I have worked for Marion County Indiana A to Z Tutoring where I tutor on the west side of the county and specialized in Hispanic tutoring because of the cultural diversity needs in this area and I can understand some Spanish and can communicate with the parents. I prefer to tutor the Kindergarten to 4th grade students.
I have taken 6 semesters of college level photography at Jefferson Community College in Louisville, KY, which is part of the University of Kentucky system. The focus was on black room development, chemicals, types of papers, film development and print development. Studies were strong on art photography and computer programs used for photography. Commercial cameras and product set up were taught, as well as creative measures for advertising products.
