About Arun

My goal is to inspire students by bringing the flavor of the most up to date affairs of science through a combination of my academic and industrial research skills, broad knowledge of scientific principles relating to real world application, and passion for teaching. I have a PhD in Chemistry, and several years of professional and tutoring experience. I am qualified to be a teacher, with PRAXIS I test scores ranging from 175-185 including subject tests.

I did my Postdoctoral work on Synthetic Bio/organic Chemistry from University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India. I was Teacher Aide, Volunteer University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, where I mentored a group of 22 graduate, undergraduate and postdocs students, taught undergraduate chemistry labs and graded assignments, helped prep laboratory materials, managed laboratory reagents and material inventory and waste, and assisted the teacher and students with lab experiments, assisted teacher in preparing presentations for undergraduate chemistry classes and actively observed different teachers with varying teaching methods in science classes and laboratories. During doctoral research I guided two graduate students towards completing their PhD thesis as postdoctoral assignment, assisted students and helped teachers in preparing presentations, and writing/reviewing research proposals and publications, trained students in laboratory techniques with appropriate standard and safety issues and library work for initiating research activities, and tutored undergraduate/graduate students.

I also coordinated a coop/intern program sponsored by Pfizer, and performed successful research programs working with highschool interns to stimulate scientific interest in research, demonstrated science experiments sponsored by Pfizer in local schools to instigate scientific inquisitiveness among school students, provide constant inspiration to students to learn and develop, and assist them reach their highest potential through constructive teaching and laboratory techniques, positive support, and mentoring, and I am associated with scientific community combating environmental issues that will provide real world experience to the students, e.g. actively participated in green chemistry initiatives. Moreover, I am experienced in the application of scientific tools used in businesses that will help facilitate lessons, and I am skilled in teaching or training using most up to date technologies and interactive hands-on techniques and guidance that creates utmost attention and a positive learning environment. I am highly proficient in the use of the Internet, databases, spreadsheets and latest subject-related software.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry.
My academic training in organic chemistry with Professors Marvin J. Miller, Jerry Freeman, Jacob Szmuszkovicz at University of Notre Dame, and R.V. Venkateswaran at Jadavpur University, included developing novel methodologies, multi-step synthesis of several biologically active natural products. As detailed in my resume, I have taught organic chemistry (lab courses) at the undergraduate level both at Jadavpur University and at University of Notre Dame. While I was a postdoc, I guided and mentored several graduate and under graduate students. During my industrial tenure at BMS and Pfizer, I coordinated company sponsored coop/intern research programs and was actively involved in mentoring several (6) undergraduate students that culminated into several publications (please see the attached list) and inspired them to select a career in science.
In summary, I have a passion for teaching and training, and I enjoy working with young adults.
