About David

I teach math and chemistry at Ivy Tech Community College and Goshen College. I have a PhD from Notre Dame, an MS from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a BS from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico.

I am a retired scientist. I worked for Bayer in the US and Germany, and Hach Company in Elkhart, IN. My team developed products used to analyze blood, urine and all kinds of solutions. I recently developed math equations used in a cell phone app to analyze swimming pool water. My latest patent was issued in 2014.

A good tutor helps students to build confidence by guiding them in the first few steps towards new knowledge, and then lets go as the students stride on with confidence toward their goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I teach a math course at Ivy Tech, the largest singly accredited community college in the U.S., serving more than 200,000 students annually. The course introduces students to mathematical thinking and reasoning. I have degrees in Chemistry specialties that require advanced math, and I have developed new algebraic equations for use in electronic color photography.

Algebra 2

I teach math and chemistry at the largest accredited community college system in the U.S. My M.S. and PhD degrees in chemistry from Notre Dame and Wisconsin required me to take graduate level math courses. I have developed medical devices and testing products that are based on chemical and math principles while working as a research scientist for over twenty years in the U.S. and In Germany.

Chemistry

I have PhD, MS and BS degrees in CHEMISTRY from Notre Dame, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and IAU-Puerto Rico. I worked in industry as a chemist developing new products for chemical analysis of blood, urine and other fluids. My latest patent was issued in 2014. I teach chemistry and math at a community college as an adjunct instructor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have BS, MS and PhD degrees in Chemistry. I teach chemistry and math at the college level. I passed the Wyzant exams in English, Grammar and Elementary Math, and 6 other subjects. Before I became a tutor, I had mentoring experience with our children who went on to graduate from college and graduate schools. I now have mentoring experience with grandchildren in all subject areas. I am aware of, and have practiced, the concepts that apply to teaching young children.

Elementary Math

I studied math and science at Notre Dame and at other colleges, and I applied this knowledge during my long career as a scientist. My wife and I came to appreciate our role as tutors for elementary subjects as we supplemented their formal education and raised our kids to be successful college graduates. I believe that progress in learning math comes when the tutor makes to effort to see the challenges or barriers from the child's point of view.

English

The study of other languages can strengthen our knowledge of English. We learn to compare and contrast the parts of speech of English and those of the other languages. I studied German at a language academy in Cologne, Germany. I learned Spanish while attending college in Puerto Rico. I studied Latin in middle school and high school, and was a Latin tutor in college. I later became a scientist, and found the effective use of language to be a distinct asset.

ESL/ESOL

(1) As an undergraduate in Puerto Rico for three years, I tutored Latin and learned Spanish and German. These activities helped to strengthen my knowledge of English language structure.
(2) I worked as a scientist at Bayer AG in Germany for two years and took language classes at the Bayer Language Academy to better understand the structure of German and English.
(3) I was a member of Toastmasters International, where accuracy in the use of the English language is developed. I was successful in Toastmaster speaking competition at the state and regional levels.

Grammar

I wrote and delivered many public speeches in local and district speech competitions as a member of Toastmasters International. I wrote scientific articles and led public meetings during my career as a scientist. My English grammar proficiency was boosted by learning foreign languages. I speak German, I write and read Spanish, and I studied the ancient language, Latin, for four years in high school.

Prealgebra

I teach math and chemistry at the largest accredited community college system in the U.S. I have B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees in chemistry from Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico. I took graduate level courses in math and physics, and developed medical devices and new testing products for more than twenty years.

Vocabulary

I have had a love affair with words all my life. I enjoyed weaving stories in my speeches as a member of Toastmasters International. I guided listeners to virtual worlds with images built with artfully chosen words. Over the years I have managed to build a broad vocabulary is a wide range of subjects. I worked as a scientist for most of my life, and I now teach college math and chemistry part time.
