I have not tutored before, but I do have a college degree in English and history, so this makes me qualified to teach the subject at hand. Learning is a skill that is very important to have in this day in age. I have always enjoyed learning something new and interesting. Having the chance to pass on my love of learning to someone else would be the best feeling. For history the most amazing thing about its subject is how the human race has developed over the years. My favorite part of history is the Middle Ages because everything that we have today began during that time and the human race has made it better. Also with the world seeming to be against the people living during this time, they never gave up on their lives and went on to invent new objects or subject and to make their own place in history. One can learn a lot from these people.
I love to read and love learning new things about history. I love seeing the look in a child's eye when they read a great book that inspires them or excites a person to learn something new. Being a part of helping students learn to read and discover history is something that is gratifying. I have faith that I will be able to help students with their struggle and allow them to learn and to love a subject they were once not so good at. Reading is a great skill to have and something that is important to me, and I hope I show that to my students.
In order to begin teaching the student, I would first see where their weakness is and why they are having a hard time learning the information. From there I would try to figure out a way to either make the material interesting or easier to learn. History is not for everyone, nor is English for some, but both are important so I would try my hardest to build a study plan to help the student learn the material and hopefully learn to love the subject. Learning can be fun and I would love to pass that on to someone. For history learning names and dates and events sometimes flashcards are easier so I would try flash cards with the student and put the events in order to help with organization. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
