Hi, My name is Lori. I was a Special Educator and Coordinator for six years, a Learning Disabilities Tutor for three years and have been a home schooling mom for 20 years. For the past seven years, I have tutored part time as well. I am especially drawn to the elementary and middle school age group and those with special needs, such as learning disabilities, ADHD, auditory and language processing disorders that affect learning. I have been trained in both Orton-Gillingham and Linda Mood-Bell Linguistics as well as Linda Mood On Cloud Nine Math program.

When I lived in New Hampshire, I began a Special Olympics team and was so proud of my kids when one was chosen to attend the International Special Olympics in Minneapolis/St. Paul and when we, as a team, won the Spirit Award! I believe achieving takes all three parties, that is, the student, the tutor and the parent acting like a team, cheering on the smallest of achievements. I love to inspire, encourage and build confidence in my students and have high expectations that they can meet any challenge.

I have been taught in both Linda Mood Bell On Cloud Nine Math Visualizing program as well as Miss Math. I have incorporated hands on math manipulatives, working from a premise that first you must visualize and understand the abstract concepts attached to objects and/or manipulatives and then slowly replace the objects with numbers.

I have been taught in both Orton-Gillingham and Linda Mood Bell Linguistics phonetic programs which starts with the premise that to learn to read, a student must understand the phonetic sound/symbol relationship and be taught the sounds in a direct and systematic manner with much repetition and practice, both in decoding and encoding. I also believe many of the reading issues stem from difficulty with having a weak sight word vocabulary and not enough reading fluency practice. So, I spend a fair bit of time working on having students increase their sight word knowledge base, and practice good reading habits, both through

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have worked with special needs students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, not only as a Special Educator in a Self-contained classroom, but also in integrating them into regular classroom settings. I have taught the children to see themselves as beautifully but differently wired than others, helping them to not only understand the triggers that cause them to lose focus and attention, but also how to learn to control their impulsive tendencies and to remain in their seats, I also worked with them on breaking up tasks into smaller manageable components with breaks in between. I also encouraged them to exercise and to carefully watch what they eat, encouraging protein and fruits and veggies and to reduce carbohydrates and sugars. Understanding how their minds work allows them to actually tap into their creative, think-out-of-the-box approach. I love watching what they can accomplish when their energies are harnessed and focused productively.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I volunteered in a Home for Autistic Children. I learned to try to meet them on their level. I would watch for stimming behaviors, using a soft, gentle voice to try to teach them in a very systematic way to reduce anxiety. I also understood that they do not like change in their routines, So, new experiences had to be gradually introduced. I also learned to speak very directly to these children as they do not understand sarcasm, figures of speech, innuendo, etc. I also came to understand that ASD is on a spectrum with a wide variety of abilities and interaction. So, each individual has their own unique underlying triggers and emotional/societal disconnect and /or comfort zone. For example, some do not like any form of touch, while others don't mind touch but loud noises bother them, while others it might be too much visual stimuli that sets them off. So, simple black and white line drawings would be more beneficial than colored pictures. Another aspect is teaching the student to learn to self-soothe or calm themselves when they can feel themselves starting to lose control or become agitated by either using calming objects or humming or counting or even involving meditation.
