I'm Alex! I'm a collaborative, results driven tutor specializing in reading and math. I graduated from the University of Saint Francis with a major in special education and a minor in elementary education. Last summer I was a tutor with a local migrant education program and it was a great experience making me want to come back for more. I focused on reading and math, but also included some science projects as well. My students varied from preschool all the way up to high school. I'm a special education teacher at an elementary school and teach 1st, 2nd, and 6th grade. My 6th graders have taught me to be creative with my lessons to 'trick' them into learning without them knowing there's actually learning going on and that's my basis for all lessons. I love creating engaging, hands on lessons for students. They have fun, I have fun, and most importantly they're learning.

In my 4 years of college I was in over 16 classrooms for field experiences, most of them being elementary schools. I've seen so much in those 4 years and also with my own classroom. I've seen high socioeconomic with great parent support, and low socioeconomic where the students have much bigger events going on outside of school to care about what you're trying to teach them. I've seen multiple classroom management approaches, different teaching styles, but most important I've formed relationships with all of the students in every one of those classrooms. This wide variety of experience has made me well rounded in teaching elementary students.

In college I had an entire year of classes solely dedicated to teaching students how to read. In every field experience, this was a core focus in the classroom because reading is such a crucial skill and also a challenging one for many students. Reading sets the building blocks for other subjects. I teach reading to 1st, 2nd, and 6th graders, all who of which are below grade level. I use strategies and create lessons to help the students make as much growth as possible. I continually assess them so I know where they are and what I'm doing that's working or what I need to modify.

Phonics is one of the first steps in reading and the big piece that many of my students in 1st and 2nd grade are missing. I have experience with phonics lessons on a daily basis. I used hands on materials so the students are more engaged and grasp the concepts better. I've used a variety of different materials when teaching phonics and have many resources available to advance student phonics knowledge.

Spelling and reading go hand in hand and compliment each other. In my reading lessons, I also incorporate some sort of word study to advance students' vocabulary. The more sound chunks they know, the more words they know, and less time and energy they need to exert on decoding words when reading allowing them to focus more on comprehension.

Many of my math lessons will include manipulatives. Studies have shown time and time again that including manipulatives have increased student understand of new math concepts introduced. Not only does it improve student understanding, but it's more engaging and enjoyable for the students. Math is a subject that builds upon basic skills, so a solid foundation is critical for students success.

I want to help students succeed as much as possible and reach their full potential, so I welcome any resources or suggestions students or parents can provide. I'm a big proponent of working as a team and doing what is needed to help students thrive. I'm easy to reach and provide timely responses. Feel free to contact me with additional questions or to schedule a lesson!
