About Linda

Hello,

My husband and I are parents of ten children. Our oldest is 23 and our youngest is now in first grade. I have always encouraged the kids to have a love of learning and always to do their best academically. I am a very encouraging and patient person. I am currently acting as a part-time resource teacher at the school that my younger children attend. I feel that the students leave my instruction on a daily bases feeling good about what they accomplished and learned.

I homeschooled several of the older children in their early elementary grades. I did enjoy teaching especially one on one and that feeling of accomplishment when they mastered a concept. I do not have a teaching degree. I worked as a registered nurse for 15 years in an intensive care unit. I currently do not have my nursing license as I let it lapse to stay home full-time with the children. I would really enjoy having the chance to help someone with a concept they just don't understand.

I currently teach second grade through eighth grade math to my IEP students. Seven years ago, we had a homeschool co-op and I taught 5-8 math. I feel like those students learned from their mistakes. I went over each and every problem that they would miss on their daily homework until I was certain that they understood what they did wrong.

I taught nine of ten children how to read. I enjoyed the challenge of making them a good reader and working on their fluency as well. Grammar was one of my favorite subjects in school and I became proficient at it through the diagramming of sentences.

I am free to meet M-F from the hours of 8:30 - 11:30 am. Afternoons and evenings, M-F, are more limited, but perhaps from 4-5 pm. I am available on Saturdays most generally. I would rather keep Sunday free for my family. I am a flexible person and wouldn't need a great deal of notice for an appointment or for a cancellation. An hour would be enough notice.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently teach at a k-8 school. I am one of the resource teachers and I work with students from second through eighth grade. I work with the students individually on phonics, reading, math, writing, punctuation. I focus on the area which the student needs the most assistance based on his/her test scores.

Prior to my current job as a Resource teacher, I taught all the subjects to a fifth grade class in a homeschool co-op for three years. I then taught fifth through eighth grade math. I always made sure that I went through each problem that the student missed and did not move on until I was convinced the student really understood the concept.

Handwriting

I taught proper letter formation, printing and cursive, to eight out of my 10 children while I was homeschooling them in their early years. Handwriting was a subject with a separate grade. I have always been very "picky" how the pencil is held and the proper and most efficient way to make the letters. Having four children in K-8, I am still very much involved in making sure their handwriting neat and easy to read.

Phonics

I homeschooled 8 out of our 10 children in their early years at least for K-3rd grade. Using the phonics method, along with daily practice, they have all become very good readers. I am convinced that teaching phonics is the best way for the four to five year old to become a proficient reader. I believe that any child can become a good reader with the proper phonics preparation, in the early years, and with daily practice.

I currently work part-time as a resource teacher at a k-8 school. I am currently working with a Down's Syndrome student with his letters and sounds trying to eventually get him to be able to read at a lower level. We are making sound progress.

I believe that I can make a difference in helping your student become a better reader!

I am very patient, kind and understanding that not all children learn at the same speed. I am currently the resource teacher at the k-8 school where four of my children attend school. I work with children with mild learning disabilities. My current challenge is working with a young man with Down's Syndrome. He knows all his letters already. I am attempting to teach him his sounds, and then hopefully, put the sounds together to make words!

I hope to get your child on the track to becoming a good reader.
